Every car on the Drive Tribe fleet, reviewed from time behind the wheel on Sydney roads: what it is like to drive, what it costs to run for a weekend, which tier it sits in, the minimum driver age and the excess. Written by the person who chose each car, with the running costs and trade-offs stated plainly rather than sold. Supercars, exotics, performance cars, luxury SUVs and the lifestyle fleet, from a $150-a-day BMW X5 to a $2,600-a-day McLaren 650S.
The long-wheelbase Model Y with six proper seats. The first electric car that makes sense for a family of six on a Sydney weekend, and a different proposition from the five-seat car most people have sat in.
The second-generation AMG GT is a bigger, all-wheel-drive, four-seat car with the same twin-turbo V8 and 430kW. It gave up the two-seat purity of the original and got a lot more usable in return.
Seven seats, real ground clearance and a shape nobody mistakes for anything else. The only car in the fleet that is genuinely capable past the end of the sealed road, and still comfortable getting there.
Eight seats and a boot behind them, which almost no seven-seat SUV manages. Nobody books it for glamour and almost everybody who needs it books it again.
375kW from a hand-built twin-turbo V8, driving the rear wheels, in a car with four doors and a boot. The last of a breed, and the most usable way to hire this much engine.
A 6.2-litre V8 in a car that was never officially sold here in any number. Rarer than a Mustang on Sydney roads, louder, and with one limitation nobody mentions until you open the back door.
We run four Range Rover Sports and they are not the same car. Petrol or diesel, five seats or seven, 177kW to 294kW. Which one you get, and why it matters more than the badge does.
A 5.0-litre V8, rear-wheel drive and no turbochargers, in a fleet where almost everything else is boosted. The most car you can hire in Sydney per dollar, and the honest limits of that.
560kW, 2.8 seconds and no noise at all. What a Taycan Turbo S is actually like for a weekend in Sydney, including the charging question nobody answers honestly.
Seven seats, 3,500kg of towing and over 1,000km of range. Why the Prado is the one 4WD that handles the school run and the Snowy Mountains without compromise, and how to get one delivered anywhere in Sydney.
