The Model Y L is the six-seat, long-wheelbase version of the car that outsells everything else on Sydney roads, and it exists to answer one question: can an electric car actually carry six people and their bags without turning the trip into a compromise. This page is the honest version of that answer. The car is confirmed by request rather than sitting on a lot, so tell us your dates and we will tell you plainly whether we can put one in your driveway.

About these prices. Figures on this page are a guide only: they are indicative from rates, based on weekday winter pricing, and were correct at the time of publishing. Rates move with the season, the day of the week and how long you book for, and longer hires taper. The live figure for any car is on that car's own page, and the exact total for your dates - including the bond, any delivery and Young Driver Cover - is confirmed before you pay.

Two numbers on that table matter more than the rest. The six seats, because that is the
reason this car exists, and the 3,040mm wheelbase, because that is the reason the six seats
are real rather than a marketing line.

What It Is Actually Like in Sydney

The third row is the whole story

Everyone has been in a Model Y. Far fewer people have been in one where the second row is
two separate chairs with a gap between them and a third row behind that. The L stretches the
floor by about 150mm and puts all of it into the back. The second-row chairs slide and recline
independently, the walk-through gap means the third row does not require anyone to fold and
climb, and the third row itself has enough legroom for an adult to sit normally for an hour or
two. That is the difference between a car that seats six on paper and one that seats six on
the way to a wedding in the Southern Highlands.

Luggage is the honest catch. With all six seats up the boot is shallow. Overnight bags for
six fit; hard suitcases for six do not. The front boot takes a couple of soft bags and helps
more than you would expect. Fold the third row and the space becomes enormous, which is how
most families will actually use it: four or five people, a lot of gear, and the sixth seat
kept for the day it is needed.

It is quick, and it is quiet in a way that changes long trips

Two motors and 340kW move a car this size to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds, which is quicker than
it has any need to be with six people on board. The value of that in Sydney is not the launch,
it is the merge. Getting onto the M4 from a short ramp, or pulling out across two lanes of
Parramatta Road, happens without drama or noise. The silence is the part passengers comment on.
Three hours up the M1 to the Hunter, or down to Kiama on the Princes Highway, arrives with
everyone still talking at normal volume.

The ride is firmer than a Kia Carnival and more composed than a standard Model Y, because
the longer wheelbase takes the pitch out of it. On the concrete slabs of the M5 the standard
car fidgets; the L settles.

Charging is not a problem, but it is a plan

Sydney has more Superchargers than any city in the country and the car routes to them
itself. What changes with six on board and a full boot is consumption. Loaded, air
conditioning on, in a mix of motorway and suburbs, well over 500km from a full charge is a
sensible expectation. That covers a Central Coast weekend or a Blue Mountains day return with
plenty in hand. A run to Port Macquarie and back is one 20-minute stop each way, which is
roughly when six people want to get out of a car anyway.

We hand it over charged. You bring it back with a comparable charge, or we charge the
difference at a rate we show you before you pay, the same way a fuel car works.

The Premium trim earns its place on a long day

Premium is the higher of the two trims and the one this page is about. Ventilated front
seats matter in a Sydney summer more than they sound like they should. The audio system is the
better one, the ambient lighting is there for the evening drive home, and the glass roof is
tinted rather than merely large. None of that changes how the car drives. All of it changes
how six people feel about the car at hour three.

Things You Should Know

It is a big car in a small car park

At nearly five metres it is longer than a Range Rover Sport. Westfield car parks and the
older multi-storeys in the city were designed for cars a size down, and the turning circle is
wider than the standard Model Y. The cameras are excellent and you will use them. It is not
hard to park, it just asks for a little more care than the car it is based on.

Driving it is different, for about ten minutes

One pedal does most of the work. Lift off and the car slows hard enough that the brake pedal
becomes something you use for the last metre. The wipers, lights and gear selection live on
the screen or happen automatically. First-time drivers find the lack of stalks odd for the
length of a suburb, then stop noticing. We walk you through it at handover and the car has
no tricks beyond that.

Six seats means six sets of expectations

A car that carries six people carries six opinions about the temperature, the music and the
route. The Model Y L has separate climate control for the rear, USB-C outlets in every row and
a screen the driver can hand to a passenger for navigation. Small things, but on the third hour
of the Hume they are the difference between a good trip and a long one. The captain's chairs
also mean the two people in the middle row are not sharing a bench, which matters more to
teenagers than to anyone else.

Autopilot is an assistant, not a driver

The car will hold its lane and its distance on the M1 and it does it well. It remains your
responsibility every second, and it is switched off on the winding roads where a lot of people
would most like a break. Treat it as a very good cruise control and it earns its keep on the
long stretches.

Who Books This Car

Families of five or six going somewhere for a weekend, who want one car rather than two and
do not want it to be a van. Wedding parties who need to move the bridal party and the
photographer in one clean, quiet car that looks right in the photos. Corporate groups doing
a site visit or a client day where six people need to talk on the way.

It is priced from $295 a day, which puts it between the Kia Carnival and the Defender in the
Lifestyle tier and well under anything with six seats and this kind of pace. It is confirmed
by request: tell us your dates, we check, and we come back to you with a straight answer
before anything is charged.

If the Tesla Model Y L Premium is booked

We never move you down a tier. If your dates are taken, these are the lifestyle cars we will offer instead, and we will tell you plainly if none of them is free rather than substituting something lesser on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Model Y L really seat six adults?

Yes, in three rows of two. The second row is a pair of captain's chairs with a walk-through gap to the third row, and the third row is usable by adults for an hour or two rather than only by children. The wheelbase is about 150mm longer than the standard Model Y, which is where the third-row legroom comes from. Six adults plus luggage for a weekend is a realistic load.

What is the real-world range in Sydney driving?

The published figure is measured on the Chinese CLTC cycle, which reads generously. In mixed Sydney driving with six on board and the air conditioning on, plan on well over 500km from a full charge. A Sydney to Newcastle return, or a day in the Hunter, is comfortably one charge. The car will tell you its remaining range accurately as you drive.

Where do I charge it, and who pays?

You charge it the way you would refuel any hire car. Tesla Superchargers are dense across Sydney and up the M1, and the car navigates to them automatically. We hand it over charged and ask that it comes back with a comparable charge, exactly as we would with a fuel car. If it comes back low, the difference is charged at a rate we show you before you pay.

What is the minimum age to hire the Model Y L?

Twenty. The Model Y L sits in the Lifestyle tier, where the minimum driver age is 20 with a full licence. Drivers under 25 are welcome and simply carry Young Driver Cover, which is shown as a line item before payment. There is nothing about the car that needs a performance-car licence history; it is quick, but it is not a car that punishes mistakes.

Can you deliver it to me?

Yes. Delivery is available across Sydney, from Parramatta and the Hills to the Eastern Suburbs, the Northern Beaches and the airport. Tell us the address when you request your dates and we quote delivery as a separate line, so the number you see before paying is the number you pay.

How does the bond work?

A bond is held on your card, not charged, and released after the car is returned and checked. The bond and the damage excess for this tier are both shown in writing before you pay, alongside the option to reduce the excess. Nothing about the figure changes on the day.

Is the Model Y L actually available to book right now?

It is confirmed by request. This is a car we source for your dates rather than one sitting on a lot, so when you send us your dates we check, come back to you with a straight yes or no, and only then take payment. If we cannot confirm it, we will say so and offer the closest car we can put in front of you.
