Formal car hire in Sydney works two ways: a chauffeured arrival for the student, where no licence or minimum age applies, or a parent driving a self-drive car with a minimum age of 20 or over. Drive Tribe delivers across Sydney and quotes chauffeured jobs per job.

A Year 12 formal arrival is one of the few nights where the car matters as much as the outfit. Drive Tribe runs two clear paths for Sydney families: a chauffeured car for the student, or a self-drive car for a parent or older sibling. Both are booked online, delivered anywhere in Sydney, and photographed at handover with you present.

About these prices. Figures on this page are the “from” Saver day rates shown on each car page on 2026-09-27. Rates move with the season, the day of the week and the length of hire, and longer hires taper. The live rate is on each car’s page, and the exact total for your dates, including the bond and any delivery, is shown before you pay. Chauffeured bookings are quoted per job.

Can a Year 12 student drive a hire car to their formal?

No. No car in the Drive Tribe fleet can be self-driven by a Year 12 student, because every self-drive car has a minimum age of 20, 25 or 30 depending on the model. A student who wants to arrive in a prestige car travels as a chauffeured passenger instead, which carries no licence check, no minimum age, no bond and no cover to buy. The alternative is a licensed adult aged 20 or over who drives, with the student as a passenger.

If you are the student and you hold a full licence, you still cannot self-drive any car on this page. The minimum age is set per car and shown on each car page before you book. The cleanest option for a Year 12 formal is a chauffeured arrival, where the driver handles the route, the parking and the drop-off. You step out at the door.

If a parent or older sibling is driving, they are the hirer. Their licence is verified through a trusted third-party provider, and the bond is held on their card as a pre-authorisation, released after the car comes back. See the full fleet for every self-drive and chauffeured option.

Which formal cars can be chauffeured?

Popular chauffeured choices for a Sydney formal include the Mercedes-AMG G63, the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, the Lamborghini Huracan, the Mercedes-AMG GT, the Ferrari FF V12, the McLaren 650S Coupe and the Tesla Model X P100D. The G63 is chauffeured only, so it cannot be self-driven at all. The Tesla Model X seats seven, which suits a small group arriving together. Chauffeured bookings are quoted per job.

The G-Wagon is a common pick for a formal because it is tall, square and easy to spot at the kerb. If you want a Lamborghini formal hire in Sydney, the Huracan is the two-seat option, and anyone under 25 can still ride in it chauffeured. The Ferrari FF V12 seats four, so it can carry the student and a couple of friends. The McLaren 650S Coupe is a two-seater and suits a solo arrival.

Every chauffeured car is delivered to your address or collected from base. You can read more about the chauffeur car hire Sydney service, or see the G63 chauffeured car page and the Model X car page. “Awesome fleet of luxury cars. Very professional to deal with. I will definitely use them again.”

Which cars can a parent drive to the formal?

A parent or older sibling aged 20 or over can self-drive the Ford Mustang Convertible (2025), the Chevrolet Camaro 2SS, the Range Rover Sport (2023), the Range Rover Sport (2022), the Nissan 350Z Convertible, the BMW 428i Convertible, the Mercedes-AMG C63 S or the Porsche Taycan Turbo. These are the cars a parent can drive to the formal, with the student as a passenger. Self-drive is priced per day, and the Saver rate on each car page is the starting point.

Convertibles are a strong choice for a parent-driven arrival because the student can be seen. The Mustang convertible, the 350Z convertible and the BMW 428i convertible all drop the roof. The Camaro 2SS is a coupe, not a convertible, so it reads as a hardtop muscle car rather than an open-top arrival. The Range Rover Sport is the practical pick if you are carrying more than one passenger or a garment bag.

The parent is the hirer, so the licence check and the bond sit with them. The bond is a pre-authorisation hold, not a charge, and it is released after the car returns. Browse the Ford hire Sydney and Range Rover hire Sydney pages, or see the Mustang convertible car page.

Not sure which option fits?

If the student is under 20, the chauffeured route is the one that works, with no licence check, no minimum age and no bond. If a parent is driving, the self-drive cars start from $290 a day.

How much does formal car hire cost?

Parent-driven formal cars start from $290 a day. A group arrival in a people mover starts from $200 a day. Chauffeured formal arrivals are quoted per job, because the job is a route and a time rather than a day. The bond and every fee are shown before you pay, and delivery is priced by distance and shown before you pay.

If you are comparing parent-driven cars, the Mustang convertible is $500, the Camaro 2SS is $700, the Range Rover Sport (2023) is $500, the Range Rover Sport (2022) is $360, the Nissan 350Z convertible is $300, the BMW 428i convertible is $290, the Mercedes-AMG C63 S is $700 and the Porsche Taycan Turbo is $700. For a group, the Kia Carnival GT-Line is $350, the LDV MIFA Luxe is $200 and the Range Rover Sport 7-seat (2020) is $300.

The checkout offers Saver, Flexible and Instant rate plans, and longer hires taper. See the all services page for how the plans differ.

How does the formal-night timing work?

Formal-night timing is built around the arrival window your school sets, so the car is at your address before the doors open and waiting when the photos are done. A chauffeured booking is quoted per job, which means you tell us the pick-up time, the address and the venue, and the driver works to that. Self-drive is priced per day, so the car is yours for the day and you control the timing.

For a chauffeured arrival, the driver drops the student at the door, then either waits nearby or returns at an agreed time. If the plan is a group arrival, the Model X seats seven and the Kia Carnival seats eight, so a single car can carry the whole group. Check your school's arrival rules before you lock in a time, because some schools stagger arrivals or restrict where cars can stop.

Delivery and collection anywhere in Sydney is priced by distance and shown before you pay. If you are arriving in the Parramatta area, see formal car hire in Parramatta. For a CBD venue, see formal car hire in the Sydney CBD.

What do parents need to know before booking?

Before booking, parents should know three things: the student cannot self-drive any car, the parent is the hirer if the car is self-drive, and a chauffeured booking is quoted per job with no licence check, no minimum age, no bond and no cover to buy. The parent books, the parent's card holds the bond if it is self-drive, and the parent's licence is verified through a trusted third-party provider. The bond is a pre-authorisation hold, released after the car comes back.

Every handover is photographed with you present, and the same-tier guarantee means you are never swapped to a lesser car. If your car is unavailable, you are offered one of the same tier or told plainly. Delivery and collection anywhere in Sydney is priced by distance and shown before you pay, so there is no surprise at the door. The minimum age to self-drive is set per car at 20, 25 or 30, and it is shown on each car page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Year 12 student drive a hire car to their formal?

No. Every self-drive car in the fleet has a minimum age of 20, 25 or 30 depending on the model, so a Year 12 student cannot self-drive any of them. The student travels as a chauffeured passenger, which has no licence check, no minimum age and no bond, or a licensed adult aged 20 or over drives.

How much does formal car hire in Sydney cost?

Parent-driven formal cars start from $290 a day. A group arrival starts from $200 a day. Chauffeured formal arrivals are quoted per job. The bond and every fee are shown before you pay.

How old does the parent driving need to be?

The parent or older sibling driving must meet the minimum age for that car, which is 20, 25 or 30 depending on the model. The parent-driven group on this page is all minimum age 20. The hirer's licence is verified through a trusted third-party provider, and the bond is held on their card.

How long does a chauffeured booking last for a formal?

A chauffeured formal arrival is quoted per job, so the length is set by the route and the timing you give us, not by an hourly rate. You tell us the pick-up time, the address and the venue, and the driver works to that. The driver can wait nearby or return at an agreed time.

Can we book one car for a group arrival?

Yes. The Tesla Model X seats seven and the Kia Carnival GT-Line seats eight, so a single car can carry a small group. The LDV MIFA Luxe seats seven and the Range Rover Sport 7-seat seats seven. For a chauffeured group, the Model X is a popular formal choice.

Can we take photos at the venue with the car?

Most families take photos at home before leaving. At the venue, a brief stop for photos depends on the school's arrival rules. Check your school's arrival rules, because some schools restrict where cars can stop or how long they can wait. Every handover is photographed with you present.

How far ahead should we book for formal season?

Formal season is busy, so book as early as you can once you have the date and the venue. Popular chauffeured cars like the G63 and the Lamborghini Huracan are limited, and the same-tier guarantee means you are never swapped to a lesser car if your choice is unavailable.

Who pays for the car, the parent or the student?

The parent books and pays, because the parent is the hirer on a self-drive booking. The parent's licence is verified through a trusted third-party provider and the bond is held on the parent's card as a pre-authorisation, released after the car comes back. A chauffeured booking has no bond.
