What is an accident replacement car?
An accident replacement car is a hire car you take while your own vehicle is off the road after a collision. Drive Tribe supplies it as an ordinary self-drive hire: you book it, your licence is verified through a trusted third-party provider, and you drive it yourself. It suits any Sydney driver whose car is in a repairer, at fault or not, paying personally or claiming on their own insurer.
To be clear about what this is: Drive Tribe hires cars. It is not a law firm, an insurer or a claims manager, and it does not give legal advice. Whether an insurer reimburses a hire is a matter between you and that insurer, and anyone unsure of their position should speak to a solicitor. If another driver was at fault, the claim process is set out on our Not at Fault Car Hire Sydney page, and the wider background sits in our guide to accident replacement vehicles.
Replacement hire works like any other hire with us. The bond is a pre-authorisation hold on your card, not a charge, released after the car comes back. You are responsible for fuel, tolls, fines and any damage during the hire, and every fee is shown before you pay.
Which replacement cars can we match to yours?
We match you to a comparable car, so if your own vehicle is a large SUV you are not handed a small hatchback. That is what like-for-like replacement means here: comparable type, size and standard.
Prestige SUVs cover most family and executive needs, including the Range Rover Sport D300 (2024), the Audi Q7 Quattro, the BMW X7, the Mercedes-Benz GLS and the Genesis GV80 (2025). Sedan drivers can step into a BMW M3 Competition G80 (2021), a Mercedes-AMG C63 S or a Porsche Taycan Turbo.
If your car is a ute or a 4WD, look at the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, the Toyota HiLux Rogue or the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss. Larger households can take a Kia Carnival GT-Line, and electric drivers a Tesla Model Y. The full list is on our fleet page.
“Great car and excellent service. Everything went smoothly and easy. Will hire again.”

How much does a replacement car cost per day?
Self-drive replacement hire is priced per day, from $125 a day across the cars on this page. Each group has its own starting point: prestige SUVs from $225 a day, performance and prestige sedans from $400 a day, 4WDs and utes from $200 a day, people movers and family SUVs from $175 a day, and electric cars from $125 a day.
Individual cars are just as clear. The Range Rover Sport (2023) is $500 a day, the Range Rover Vogue is $225 a day, and the Mercedes-Benz S500 L is $500 a day. A Audi RS 3 Sportback is $550 a day and a Tesla Model 3 Performance is $125 a day.
At checkout you choose between Saver, Flexible and Instant rate plans, and longer hires taper, so a repair that runs for weeks costs less per day than a short booking. Delivery and collection anywhere in Sydney is priced by distance and shown before you pay, and the bond is a pre-authorisation hold released after the car comes back. If the repair drags on, weekly and monthly hire is the cheaper way to structure it.
What if the accident was not your fault?
If another driver caused the crash, you may be able to recover the cost of the hire through a claim. That process has its own page: Not at Fault Car Hire Sydney explains the steps, the paperwork and how a claim generally runs. This page is the umbrella for every driver whose car is off the road, whether the accident was your fault or not.
The practical difference is who ends up paying, not how the hire works. Drive Tribe still hires you the car on ordinary terms: licence verified, bond held on your card as a pre-authorisation and released after return, and you responsible for fuel, tolls, fines and damage during the hire. We do not manage claims and we cannot tell you what an insurer will do.
If your car has been declared a write-off, the position changes again, and written off and not at fault covers that. If you are still working out what to do first, the first 24 hours after an accident is a sensible starting point. Businesses and fleet operators with several vehicles off the road should read replacement vehicles for business and fleet owners.
Not sure it will suit your situation?
You do not need to know how your claim will end before you book. We hire you a comparable car on clear terms, and you can extend or return it as the repair progresses.

You need a current driver licence, a card in your name for the bond pre-authorisation, and a booking. That is the whole list. Your licence is verified through a trusted third-party provider, and the minimum age to self-drive is set per car at 20, 25 or 30, so check the car page before you book.
The bond is a hold, not a charge. It is taken as a pre-authorisation on your card and released after the car comes back, and both the bond and every fee are shown before you pay. You are responsible for fuel, tolls, fines and damage during the hire, exactly as you would be on any other self-drive hire.
Every handover is photographed with you present, which protects you as much as us if there is any question later about the car's condition. If you would rather not drive at all, a chauffeured booking turns you into a passenger: no licence check, no minimum age, no bond and no cover to buy, quoted per job through Chauffeur Car Hire Sydney.
How long can you keep the replacement?
You keep it for as long as you need it, subject to availability. A repair might take a few days for panel work or several weeks when parts are on order. You book the dates you expect, and extend if the repairer needs more time.
Longer hires taper, so the daily rate falls as the booking lengthens. If the repair is going to run into weeks, it is worth structuring the hire as weekly or monthly hire from the start rather than extending a short booking day by day. That keeps the cost predictable while your car sits in the workshop.
If you are claiming on your own insurer or another driver's, the length of the hire may be a matter for that claim, and that is between you and the insurer. Drive Tribe does not manage claims or give legal advice, and anyone unsure how long a hire may be covered should speak to a solicitor. What we can do is keep the car with you for as long as you are paying for it, on the same clear terms throughout.
How quickly can a replacement car be delivered?
We deliver as soon as a matching car is free, and the exact timing is confirmed when you enquire. Timing depends on which car you need and what is already out. Tell us your vehicle and your suburb and we will give you a real date.
Delivery and collection anywhere in Sydney is priced by distance and shown before you pay. Because you are without a car, we bring the replacement to your home or your workplace rather than asking you to come to us. Cars are based at Mascot, Parramatta, Merrylands and Plumpton, and we cover the wider metro area including Sydney CBD, Mascot and the airport, Bass Hill, Cecil Hills and St Marys.
If you would rather collect, you can pick the car up from its base instead. Either way, the handover is photographed with you present, and the same-tier guarantee applies. Start with contact us and we will confirm what is available.

Self-drive replacement hire starts from $125 a day across the cars on this page, with prestige SUVs from $225 a day and performance sedans from $400 a day. Longer hires taper, and delivery is priced by distance and shown before you pay.
Can I hire a replacement car if the accident was my fault?
Yes. This page covers any driver whose car is off the road after a crash, at fault or not, including those paying themselves or claiming on their own insurer. The hire works the same way either way; only who ends up paying may differ.
What does like-for-like replacement car actually mean?
It means the replacement is comparable to your own vehicle, so a large SUV is replaced with a large SUV rather than a small car. We match on type, size and standard, not on badge alone.
What do I need to bring to hire a replacement car?
A current driver licence and a card in your name for the bond pre-authorisation. Your licence is verified through a trusted third-party provider, and the minimum age to self-drive is set per car at 20, 25 or 30.
Do you deliver the replacement car to me?
Yes. Delivery and collection anywhere in Sydney is available, priced by distance and shown before you pay, so the car can come to your home or workplace. We deliver as soon as a matching car is free, confirmed when you enquire.
How long can I keep a replacement car while mine is repaired?
As long as you need it, subject to availability. Repairs can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, and you can extend if the repairer needs more time. Longer hires taper, and weekly or monthly hire keeps the cost predictable.
Will my insurer pay for the replacement car?
That depends on your policy and your circumstances, and it is a matter between you and your insurer. Drive Tribe hires cars and does not manage claims or give legal advice. Anyone unsure of their position should speak to a solicitor.
Is this legal advice?
No. Drive Tribe is a car hire company, not a law firm, an insurer or a claims manager, and nothing here is legal advice. We supply the replacement vehicle on ordinary hire terms; any question about entitlements or claims should go to a solicitor.
