Why people hire a McLaren

A McLaren is the supercar for people who care how a car is made. The company grew out of the Formula One team Bruce McLaren founded in the 1960s, and its road cars are built in Woking, England, with the same obsession: light weight, a carbon-fibre structure, and engineering first. The badge is less shouty than a Lamborghini's and less familiar than a Ferrari's, and plenty of owners like it that way.

What that means on the road is precision. McLarens steer with real feel, stop with enormous force and ride far more comfortably than their numbers suggest. They are fast in a way that feels controlled rather than wild, which is why many drivers find them less intimidating than they expected.

In Sydney, a McLaren gets plenty of attention, but a different kind. People who know cars will cross the street to look; others will ask what it is. If you want the car to be understood rather than just noticed, that is a point in its favour.

The McLaren cars in our fleet

We run two McLarens, nearly a decade apart, from the company's core line of mid-engined supercars. The 650S Coupe evolved from the MP4-12C, the car that began McLaren's current road-car era in 2011. The 750S is the current model, successor to the 720S. Both are mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive two-seaters with twin-turbo V8s and dihedral doors, and both are supercar tier for drivers 25 and over.

McLaren 650S Coupe

The McLaren 650S Coupe is a mid-engined two-seater built on a carbon-fibre tub, with a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 behind the seats. Our figures: 478 kW, 678 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 3.0 seconds, rear-wheel drive, and a range of roughly 620 km on a tank. Power reaches the road through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Those numbers put it right at the sharp end of our fleet. Where it really stands apart is the chassis. The suspension links the dampers hydraulically instead of relying on conventional anti-roll bars, so the car stays flat through corners and still breathes over bumps. It rides better than plenty of ordinary sports cars.

The dihedral doors swing up and out, and they are the first thing everyone films. Getting in takes a technique: sit on the wide sill, then swing your legs in. Once inside, visibility is better than in most mid-engined cars, with slim pillars and a low scuttle. Under hard braking the rear wing rises as an airbrake, one of the car's party pieces.

The trade-offs are honest ones. There are two seats, luggage goes in a small front compartment, and the engine is more of a muscular roar than a musical one. At low speed in heavy traffic it is civilised, but it always feels eager to be somewhere else.

The 650S is supercar tier, 25 and over, based at Mascot near the airport, and it can be booked self-drive or chauffeured. It suits a driver who wants the most precise car we have, a couple after a proper drive, or a client arrival with substance. Our McLaren 650S hire guide covers it in more depth.

McLaren 750S, booked by request

The second McLaren in the Drive Tribe collection is a 750S. It is ready to drive but does not have a car page yet, so it is booked by request: call 0468 011 118 or send an enquiry through our contact page, and we confirm dates, the rate and the bond before anything is paid.

The 750S is the successor to the 720S and a big step up from the 650S. It uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 making 552 kW and 800 Nm, drives the rear wheels, and reaches 100 km/h in about 2.8 seconds. That makes it the quickest supercar in our collection. Like every modern McLaren it is built around a carbon-fibre monocoque, and it keeps the dihedral doors.

In practice the 750S feels like a more intense 650S: sharper throttle, more urgent acceleration and a chassis that makes very high speed feel calm. That is also its risk on public roads. It is so capable that a legal speed feels slow, and the right driver for it is someone who is comfortable leaving most of it unused.

It is supercar tier and 25 and over, like the 650S. Collection or delivery is arranged when you book by request.

650S or 750S: which McLaren to choose

  • First time in a supercar: the 650S. It is friendlier at the limit and still extremely fast.
  • You have driven supercars before: the 750S, for the newest engineering and the biggest numbers.
  • A chauffeured booking: the 650S, which is set up for chauffeured hire. Ask us about the 750S.
  • A booking you want to make online, right now: the 650S. The 750S is by request.
  • A content shoot: either. Both have the doors people want on camera.

If you are also weighing up a Ferrari, our Ferrari 488 vs McLaren 650S comparison sets the two side by side.

Alternatives from the rest of our supercar line-up

A McLaren is a two-seater with a small boot, and that rules it out for some trips. These are the real Drive Tribe cars people compare it with, and when each makes more sense.

Lamborghini Huracan: more theatre

The Lamborghini Huracan has a naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 with 449 kW and 560 Nm, all-wheel drive and 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. It is slower than the McLaren on paper but louder, wilder to look at and more secure in the wet. Choose it for an arrival or a birthday. Supercar tier, 25 and over, Mascot, self-drive or chauffeured.

Ferrari FF V12: four seats

The Ferrari FF V12 is a four-seat, all-wheel-drive grand tourer with a 6.3-litre V12: 486 kW, 683 Nm and 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. It has a proper boot and rear seats, so it suits two couples, a family or a weekend away. Supercar tier, 25 and over, Mascot, self-drive or chauffeured.

BMW M3 Competition xDrive: five seats, still very quick

The BMW M3 Competition G80 xDrive is a five-seat sedan with a twin-turbo inline six: 390 kW, 650 Nm, all-wheel drive and 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. It is not a supercar to look at, but it is seriously fast and takes four passengers and their bags. It sits in the Exotic tier, needs a driver aged 25 or over, and is based at Parramatta.

The whole range is on our supercar hire page and the full fleet. If your first choice is unavailable, we never move you down a tier; we tell you plainly if nothing comparable is free.

McLaren hire for occasions

Birthdays and 21sts

For a birthday driver aged 25 or over with a full licence, a McLaren is a genuinely special day behind the wheel. For a 21st, book the 650S chauffeured: our driver drives, the birthday person rides, and there is no age limit for the passenger. It has two seats, so that means one passenger.

Photoshoots and content

Doors up, low light, a clean backdrop: a McLaren earns its place in a shoot. Book it for the day, plan locations around morning or late light, and allow time between spots. Commercial shoots on busy public streets may need a council permit, which the organiser arranges. Our car hire for photoshoots page covers content bookings.

Corporate and client days

A McLaren says engineering rather than flash, which suits a client lunch or a reward for a team member who has earned it. For group days and gifts, see our supercar experience page.

Airport arrivals

The 650S is based at Mascot, a few minutes from Sydney Airport. Chauffeured, it is a memorable pick-up for one passenger with light luggage; for a family arrival with suitcases, choose a bigger car.

Delivery, collection and chauffeur options

Collect the 650S from its base at Mascot, near the airport and a short drive from the CBD, or have it delivered anywhere in Sydney: home, hotel, office or venue. Delivery is priced by suburb and shown in the booking total before you pay, and the handover walk-around is the same wherever it happens. Our supercar hire in the Sydney CBD and supercar hire in Bankstown pages cover two areas we deliver to often.

On a chauffeured booking, one of our drivers brings the 650S and stays with it for the window you book. It is quoted by the hour with the driver included, and tolls during the booking are in the quote. There is no bond, no licence check and no age limit for the passenger. The chauffeur car hire page explains how quotes work, and you can ask for one by message from the car page.

How booking, the ID check and the bond work

Booking the 650S online takes a few minutes:

  1. Choose dates and pick-up or delivery. The car page shows the rate, kilometre allowance, minimum age and excess.
  2. Pick a booking type. Flexible is refundable in full more than 72 hours before pick-up. Saver is cheaper and non-refundable. Instant confirms on the spot and is non-refundable.
  3. Choose cover. Optional cover lowers the excess. The total, the bond and the excess are all on screen before you commit.
  4. Pay. The rental can be paid by card, cash or bank transfer. A card is stored on every booking because the bond needs one.
  5. Verify your ID. A link arrives from a trusted third-party provider. You photograph your licence and take a live selfie on your phone, and the document is checked against the Australian Government Document Verification Service.

Finish the check at least 24 hours before the trip, or before handover if you book inside 24 hours. We never hand a car to an unverified driver, and the licence is checked again in person. A full licence is required: provisional and learner licences cannot drive our cars. Overseas licences need an International Driving Permit or an accredited English translation unless already in English.

The bond is a pre-authorisation hold on your stored card, placed before handover. It is not a charge. It equals the damage excess for your booking, which depends on the tier and the cover you choose, and it is released once the car is returned, inspected and anything owing is settled. Some banks take a few days to clear it. Our rental policy and how it works page set out every step.

At handover we walk around the car with you and record condition, fuel and odometer in a timestamped report with photos you confirm. That report protects both sides.

Where to drive a McLaren near Sydney

A McLaren rewards a smooth road with real corners, driven early and within the limit. All of these are sealed public roads, all are policed, and tolls and fines are the driver's.

Grand Pacific Drive

South through the Royal National Park to the Sea Cliff Bridge. The bends in the park suit the car's precision, and the coastline is the best near Sydney. Limits are low and weekend cyclists are everywhere, so pick a weekday morning.

Macquarie Pass

A tight, climbing road between the Illawarra coast and the Southern Highlands. Take it gently; the hairpins are slow and trucks use it. Carry on to Bowral for lunch and come home via the Hume.

Putty Road

A long rural road running north from Windsor toward the Hunter, quiet on weekdays and lined with bush. Surfaces vary, so watch for patched sections, and fill up before you leave because fuel stops are scarce.

The harbour and the eastern suburbs

Over the Harbour Bridge, then out through Rose Bay and Vaucluse to Watsons Bay and back via Bondi. It is the drive for being seen rather than for driving, and it is best at sunrise on a weekend. Parking is tight and metered.

School zones apply on school days, generally 8 to 9.30am and 2.30 to 4pm, and mobile speed cameras are common across Sydney.

Tips for driving a McLaren hire car

The 650S cabin is simple by supercar standards: a steering wheel with no clutter of buttons, a portrait touchscreen in the centre, and the drive-mode dials within easy reach. Most people feel at home within a few minutes. The unfamiliar parts are the doors, the low seating position and how wide the car is.

  • Learn the doors. There is no ordinary handle. We show you how to open and close them at handover, and how much ceiling height they need in a garage.
  • Get in bottom first. Sit on the sill, then swing your legs in. Getting out is the reverse.
  • Keep the modes in Normal. Separate dials set handling and powertrain to Normal, Sport or Track. Normal suits Sydney; Track has no place on a public road.
  • Mind the nose. Take driveways, humps and ramps slowly and at an angle, and avoid steep multi-storey car parks.
  • Let it warm up. Drive gently for the first ten minutes before using high revs.

Both McLarens take 98 RON premium unleaded only. Return the car with the same fuel level recorded at handover; there is a 30-minute grace period on the return time, followed by an inspection against the handover report. Only drivers named and verified on the agreement may drive, and one verified additional driver can be added. The rules are the same for every car we hire: sealed public roads in NSW only, no track days, no burnouts, no rideshare work.

Your own McLaren off the road?

If your own McLaren is being repaired after an accident that was not your fault, a like-for-like replacement may be recoverable from the at-fault driver's insurer. Our accident replacement car page explains how that works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hire a McLaren in Sydney if I am under 25?

Not to drive yourself. Both our McLarens are supercar tier, and every supercar needs a driver aged 25 or over with a full licence. If you are younger, book the 650S chauffeured: our driver takes the wheel, and there is no age limit for the passenger.

Which McLarens does Drive Tribe have?

Two. The McLaren 650S Coupe, a 478 kW twin-turbo V8 you can book online, and a McLaren 750S, the 552 kW successor to the 720S. The 750S has no car page yet, so it is booked by request on 0468 011 118 or through our contact page.

Do you deliver the McLaren?

Yes, anywhere in Sydney, including homes, hotels, offices and venues. Delivery is priced by suburb and shown in the booking total before you pay. You can also collect the 650S from its base at Mascot, near Sydney Airport. The handover walk-around is the same either way.

Is there a bond on McLaren hire?

Yes. It is a pre-authorisation hold on your stored card, placed before handover, not a charge. It equals the damage excess for the booking, which depends on the tier and the cover you choose. It is released after the car is returned, inspected and anything owing is settled. Chauffeured bookings have no bond.

Can I hire the McLaren 650S with a driver?

Yes. Our driver brings the car and stays with it for the window you book. It is quoted by the hour with the driver included, and tolls during the booking are in the quote. The 650S is a two-seater, so a chauffeured booking carries one passenger beside our driver.

What licence do I need to hire a McLaren?

A full driver licence. Provisional and learner licences cannot drive our cars. Overseas licences need an International Driving Permit or an accredited English translation unless already in English. You also complete an online ID check with a live selfie at least 24 hours before the trip, and the licence is checked again at handover.

Is the McLaren 650S hard to drive?

Less than most people expect. The gearbox is smooth in traffic, the ride is comfortable and visibility is good for a mid-engined car. The challenges are practical: getting in and out through the doors, the low nose on driveways, and the width in tight spaces. We cover all of it at handover.

How much luggage fits in a McLaren?

Very little. The engine sits behind the seats, so luggage goes in a small front compartment that suits soft bags rather than suitcases. For a trip with real luggage or more people, the four-seat Ferrari FF or the five-seat BMW M3 Competition xDrive are better choices.

What fuel does a McLaren hire car use?

98 RON premium unleaded only. Return the car with the same fuel level recorded in the handover report. The 650S has a range of roughly 620 km on a tank, though spirited driving or heavy traffic will reduce that noticeably.

Can I take the McLaren on a track?

No. Our cars are for sealed public roads in NSW only. Track days, burnouts, rideshare work and unsealed roads are all excluded. For a good drive, try the Grand Pacific Drive or Macquarie Pass early on a weekday and keep the car in its Normal settings.
