Why people hire a Mercedes-Benz in Sydney

Few badges cover as much ground as the three-pointed star. The same name sits on a compact family car, a V8 sports car, a boxy off-roader built in some form since 1979, and the S-Class, the saloon other luxury cars have been measured against for decades.

That spread is why the brand works so well for hire. There is a Mercedes for the airport run and a Mercedes for the wedding, and almost everyone already knows what each one says. You do not have to explain a G-Wagon outside a church.

AMG is the other half of the story. It began as a tuning house, became the performance division of Mercedes-Benz, and builds its V8s to be heard. Four of our seven cars carry an AMG V8, and the S500 L has a twin-turbo V8 of its own.

Driving one in Sydney is mostly about comfort and presence rather than speed. The M4 at five o'clock will not let an AMG stretch its legs, but a good Mercedes makes stop-start traffic easier, and the big ones are properly quiet at motorway pace. The trade-offs are real: the G-Wagon is tall and thirsty, the AMG GT is low and seats two, and the S500 L is long enough that you plan your parking.

The Mercedes-Benz cars in our fleet

Seven cars across four tiers. Each has its own page with the rate, kilometre allowance, excess and minimum age. The notes below cover what those pages do not: how each one feels, what it is bad at, and who it suits.

Mercedes-AMG G63 G-Wagon (white, 2018)

The white Mercedes G-Wagon is the car most people mean when they say they want a Mercedes for the weekend. It is a 2018 AMG G63: a twin-turbo V8 with 430 kW and 850 Nm, all-wheel drive, 0-100 km/h in about 4.5 seconds, and side-exit exhausts that make sure the whole street knows it has arrived.

It is also tall, square and heavy, and it drives like it. The steering is slower than a sedan's, the ride is firm for a luxury car and it drinks fuel with real enthusiasm. Nobody hires it for the corners. They hire it because nothing else looks like it outside a restaurant, a hotel or a wedding venue.

Exotic tier, so the minimum age is 25. It is based at Parramatta and can be booked self-drive or with a Drive Tribe chauffeur. The full G-Wagon review has the long version.

Mercedes-AMG GT (white, 2018)

The Mercedes-AMG GT is the driver's car of the group. A hand-assembled biturbo V8 sits well back under a very long bonnet and drives the rear wheels: 350 kW, 630 Nm and 0-100 km/h in about 4 seconds.

It is a two-seater with a modest hatch boot, so it suits a couple and a weekend bag, not four suitcases. The nose is long and low, which matters on steep driveways. In return you get a car that feels special at legal speeds, with a sound that makes a winding road worth the early start.

Exotic tier, 25 and over, based at Parramatta. It can be booked self-drive or chauffeured, though with a driver aboard it carries one passenger. The AMG GT review goes deeper on how it drives.

Mercedes-AMG C63 S (white, 2017)

The Mercedes C63 S is the AMG V8 you can take to a client meeting. It is a four-door C-Class sedan with 375 kW and 700 Nm going to the rear wheels, and it reaches 100 km/h in about 4 seconds. Four adults fit, the boot takes real luggage, and it is comfortable enough to live with every day.

The torque is the thing to respect. That much shove through the rear tyres on a wet Sydney road calls for a gentle right foot until you know the car. Driven calmly it is a well-finished sedan; woken up, it is loud in the best way.

It sits on the Performance tier with a minimum age of 20, a rare chance for a driver under 25 to hire an AMG V8. Drivers aged 20 to 24 get Young Driver Cover added automatically. Self-drive only, based at Parramatta. Read the C63 S review, or our BMW M3 vs Mercedes C63 comparison if you are torn between the German rivals.

Mercedes-AMG G63, chauffeured (black)

The black Mercedes-AMG G63 is the same idea as the white G-Wagon with one difference: you cannot drive it. It comes with a Drive Tribe driver every time and is quoted per job, the simplest way to arrive in a G-Class without thinking about parking, fuel or the drive home.

The figures match the white car, 430 kW, 850 Nm, all-wheel drive and about 4.5 seconds to 100 km/h, though with a chauffeur at the wheel what matters is the back seat and the entrance. Black suits weddings, red-carpet events and VIP transfers, and it looks as good under street lights as in daylight.

Because it is chauffeur-only there is no bond, no licence check and no age limit for passengers, so it works for formals and 18th or 21st birthdays where nobody in the group could hire an Exotic car themselves. It is based at Merrylands and listed on the Luxury tier.

Mercedes-Benz GLS (black, 2019)

The Mercedes-Benz GLS is the seven-seater, and the car that answers most family questions. The 2019 model makes 243 kW and 700 Nm, drives all four wheels, reaches 100 km/h in about 6.3 seconds and covers around 1,140 km on a tank, so a weekend in the Hunter Valley and back barely registers.

Its nickname is the S-Class of SUVs, and the ride backs that up: quiet, soft and composed on long motorway runs. The third row is best for children or shorter adults. With all seven seats in use the boot is small, so plan the luggage.

Luxury tier, minimum age 20, self-drive only, based at Mascot near the airport, an easy pick-up for a family coming off a flight. Read the GLS review, or compare it with other big cars on our 7 seater car hire page.

Mercedes-Benz S500 L (silver, 2015)

The Mercedes-Benz S500 L is the long-wheelbase S-Class, the flagship limousine of the range. A twin-turbo V8 makes 335 kW and 700 Nm through the rear wheels, 0-100 km/h takes about 4.8 seconds, and air suspension irons out Sydney's patched road surfaces better than anything else here.

The L is the point. The extra length goes into the rear doors and the back seat, which is built for stretching out, so this is the Mercedes to book when the people in the back matter most: parents on an anniversary, a bride and her father, a visiting executive. It is well over five metres long, so tight inner-city car parks take patience.

It is self-drive only and the minimum age is 25, even though it sits on the Luxury tier. If you want a friend to drive while you ride in the back, one verified additional driver can be named on the agreement. It is based at Merrylands.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class B180 (white, 2017)

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is the sensible one, and that is a compliment. The 2017 B180 has 90 kW and 200 Nm driving the front wheels. It is not quick and does not pretend to be. What it offers is a high seating position, a genuinely roomy back seat, a big boot for its size and around 850 km from a tank.

It suits the visiting relative who wants something familiar, a week of errands, or an airport run where the badge matters a little and the fuel bill matters more. Lifestyle tier, open to drivers from 20, self-drive only, and based at Mascot, a few minutes from the airport.

Which Mercedes to choose

Seven cars is enough choice to get it wrong. Start from the trip, not the badge.

A couple going away for the weekend

If you are both over 25 and pack light, the AMG GT is the one you will remember. If you need four doors or you are under 25, the C63 S gives you most of the sound with a back seat. If comfort beats noise, take the S500 L.

A family, or a group of seven

The GLS, without much debate. It is our only seven-seat Mercedes, the seats are comfortable over distance, and collecting it at Mascot suits anyone arriving by plane.

A client meeting or a corporate day

The S500 L says you take the day seriously without saying it loudly. The C63 S suits a driver who wants to enjoy the trip between meetings. If you would rather work in the back, book the chauffeured G63.

Your first performance car

The C63 S is the gentler introduction: four doors, a normal driving position and good visibility, and it is happy to potter. The AMG GT asks more of you, from its length to its low nose.

An arrival that needs to be seen

The G-Class, either version. Drive the white G-Wagon yourself if you are 25 or over, or book either G with a driver and leave the car to someone else.

Mercedes hire for weddings, formals and other occasions

  • Weddings: the black G63 with a driver for the bridal party, or the white G-Wagon chauffeured for a lighter look. The S500 L suits parents or grandparents if a verified friend drives it. See wedding car hire for the wider line-up.
  • Formals: chauffeured only for students, which means the G63 or the G-Wagon with a Drive Tribe driver. Our formal car hire page explains how it works.
  • 21sts, 30ths and 40ths: a self-drive AMG for the birthday person if they meet the minimum age, or a chauffeured G-Class for a group dinner.
  • Photoshoots and content: the white G-Wagon and AMG GT photograph cleanly against the harbour. Shoots on public roads follow the same rules as any drive: no stunts, no burnouts.
  • Corporate and airport arrivals: the S500 L or chauffeured G63 for a visiting client, the GLS or B-Class from Mascot for a family off a flight.

For a wedding or formal, give us the addresses, times and number of passengers when you ask for the quote. The chauffeured price is fixed before you book, not worked out afterwards.

Delivery, collection and chauffeur options

Every Mercedes has a home base, and every self-drive one can be delivered to you instead.

  • Parramatta: the white G-Wagon, the AMG GT and the C63 S.
  • Mascot, near the airport: the GLS and the B-Class.
  • Merrylands: the S500 L and the chauffeured black G63.

Delivery reaches anywhere in Sydney, priced by suburb and shown in the booking total before you pay. Either way the handover is the same: a walk-around together, with condition, fuel and odometer recorded in a timestamped report with photos you confirm.

The white G-Wagon and the AMG GT can also be booked with a Drive Tribe driver, quoted by the hour with the driver included. The black G63 is chauffeur-only and quoted per job. The driver brings the car and stays with it for the booked window, and tolls during the booking are in the quote. Ask by message from the car page, or read our chauffeur car hire page.

How booking, the ID check and the bond work

The process is the same for every self-drive Mercedes, and designed so nothing is a surprise at handover. How it works has the full walk-through.

  1. Book online. Choose dates, pick-up or delivery, and a booking type: Flexible (refundable in full more than 72 hours before pick-up), Saver (cheaper, non-refundable) or Instant (confirms on the spot, non-refundable). The total, the bond and the excess are on screen before you commit.
  2. Pay your way. Card, cash or bank transfer for the rental. A card is stored on every booking because the bond needs one.
  3. Verify your ID. A trusted third-party provider sends a link. You photograph your licence and take a live selfie, and the document is checked against the Australian Government Document Verification Service. Do it at least 24 hours before the trip.
  4. The bond. A pre-authorisation hold on the stored card, not a charge, equal to the damage excess for your tier and cover. Optional cover lowers it.
  5. Return. Same fuel level, 30-minute grace period, inspection against the handover report, then the bond is released. Some banks take a few days to clear the hold.

A full licence is required; provisional and learner licences cannot drive our cars. Overseas licences need an International Driving Permit or an accredited English translation unless already in English. If your car is unavailable we never move you down a tier, and we say plainly if nothing comparable is free.

Where to drive a Mercedes around Sydney

All sealed, all within an easy morning of the city. Tolls and fines are the driver's on a self-drive booking, school zones apply on school days and speed cameras are common, so enjoy the car rather than the speedo.

Old Pacific Highway, Brooklyn to Somersby

The classic Sunday run north of the Hawkesbury, and the best match for the AMG GT and C63 S. Go early: by mid-morning it fills with motorcycles and cyclists, and it is well patrolled.

Grand Pacific Drive and the Sea Cliff Bridge

South through the Royal National Park and down the coast towards Wollongong, over the Sea Cliff Bridge. It suits the S500 L for a slow, scenic drive and the AMG GT for views with a soundtrack. National park entry fees can apply.

Eastern suburbs to Watsons Bay

The G-Wagon is a city car in spirit. A loop through Double Bay and Rose Bay to Watsons Bay is short, slow and full of places it was built to arrive at. Parking is tight, so allow time.

The Hunter Valley

About two hours up the M1 and the Hunter Expressway, and the natural weekend for the GLS or the S500 L. Leave the car at the hotel on tasting day.

Tips for driving a Mercedes hire car

  • Fuel: our petrol Mercedes take 98 RON premium unleaded. Check the label inside the fuel flap before you fill up.
  • Drive modes: Comfort is the right setting for Sydney traffic in the AMG cars. Save the sportier modes for an open road.
  • Height and length: check clearance signs at older car parks in the G-Wagon, and give the S500 L room in tight basements.
  • Low nose: take steep driveways and speed humps in the AMG GT slowly and at an angle.
  • Wet roads: the C63 S and AMG GT send a lot of torque to the rear wheels. Be gentle on wet roundabouts.

Take two minutes at handover to set your seat, pair your phone and enter the first address. On these Mercedes much of it runs through a controller on the centre console rather than a touchscreen, which is easier to learn while parked.

The driving rules apply to the G-Wagon as much as anything else: sealed public roads in NSW only, so no beach driving, fire trails or 4WD tracks, however capable it is.

If your own Mercedes is off the road

If your Mercedes is being repaired after an accident that was not your fault, a like-for-like replacement may be recoverable from the at-fault driver's insurer: a GLS for a GLS owner, an AMG for an AMG owner. Our accident replacement car page explains how it works.

See the rest of the fleet

If none of these seven fits, the full fleet runs from utes to supercars, the exotic car hire page puts the G-Wagon and AMG GT beside the rest of the Exotic tier, and luxury car hire does the same for the GLS and S500 L.

Or call 0468 011 118, seven days, 7am to 9pm. Tell us the date, the people and the occasion, and we will tell you honestly which car fits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hire a Mercedes in Sydney at 21?

Yes. The C63 S, GLS and B-Class are open to drivers from 20, with Young Driver Cover added automatically for drivers aged 20 to 24. The G-Wagon, AMG GT and S500 L need a driver aged 25 or over. The chauffeured G63 has no age limit for passengers.

Can I hire a G-Wagon in Sydney?

Yes, two of them. The white 2018 AMG G63 G-Wagon can be booked self-drive by drivers aged 25 or over, or with a Drive Tribe chauffeur. The black AMG G63 is chauffeur-only and quoted per job.

Do you deliver Mercedes hire cars?

Yes, anywhere in Sydney, priced by suburb and shown in the booking total before you pay. You can also collect from the car's base: Parramatta for the G-Wagon, AMG GT and C63 S, Mascot for the GLS and B-Class, and Merrylands for the S500 L.

Is there a bond on a Mercedes hire?

Yes, for self-drive bookings. It is a pre-authorisation hold on your stored card, placed before handover, not a charge. It equals the damage excess for your booking, which depends on the tier and cover you choose, and is released once the car is returned and inspected.

Can I get a Mercedes with a driver?

Yes. The black AMG G63 is chauffeur-only and quoted per job. The white G-Wagon and the AMG GT can be booked with a Drive Tribe driver, quoted by the hour. There is no bond and no licence check for passengers, and tolls during the booking are included.

What licence do I need to hire a Mercedes?

A full driver licence; provisional and learner licences cannot drive our cars. Overseas licences need an International Driving Permit or an accredited English translation unless already in English. Your licence is verified online before the trip and checked again in person at handover.

Which Mercedes has seven seats?

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS. It seats seven, drives all four wheels and is based at Mascot near the airport. The third row suits children or shorter adults on long trips, and with every seat in use the boot is small.

Can I hire a Mercedes for a wedding?

Yes. The black G63 with a chauffeur is the usual choice for bridal parties, and the white G-Wagon can also come with a driver. The S500 L limousine is self-drive, so it suits a wedding where a verified friend or relative aged 25 or over does the driving.

What fuel do the Mercedes hire cars take?

Our petrol Mercedes take 98 RON premium unleaded. Check the label inside the fuel flap before filling. The fuel level is recorded at handover and the car should come back at the same level.

Can I take the G-Wagon off-road?

No. Every Drive Tribe car, including the G-Wagon, is limited to sealed public roads in NSW. That rules out beach driving, fire trails and 4WD tracks. Track days, burnouts and rideshare work are also not allowed.
