- Delivered across Sydney
- Bond and fees shown before you pay
- Never swapped to a lesser car
The roads north of Manly are the reason to hire a performance car in Sydney at all. They are also damp, tree-covered and technical in a way that makes a powerful rear-wheel-drive car a genuine handful in the wet. Both of those things are true and the second one decides the booking more often than people expect.

The Best Corners Near Sydney, and the Trickiest Surface
The Northern Beaches road network is the reason people who care about driving live up here. The sequence north from Manly, the headland roads, and the run inland towards the national park are technical, varied and genuinely engaging in a way that most Sydney roads are not.
They are also the most likely to catch out a powerful car, and the reason is the surface rather than the corners.
Much of the good road runs under heavy tree cover. That keeps it damp long after rain has stopped, drops leaf litter and moisture onto the surface, and produces patches of grip that vary considerably within a single corner. On a dry day after a wet night, a road up here can be greasy in exactly the places you would not expect.
That combination - a technical road with an inconsistent surface - is where a 450 horsepower rear-wheel-drive car asks the most of a driver who has not driven one before.
This Is Where All-Wheel Drive Actually Earns Its Money
We do not usually push drivetrain, because across most of Sydney it makes little practical difference. The Northern Beaches is the exception and it is worth being direct about it.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo is all-wheel drive, delivers its torque instantly and predictably, and has no clutch, no gearchange and no drama. On a damp, technical road it is comfortably the fastest and by a wide margin the easiest of the four to drive quickly without incident.
It is also silent, which matters more up here than it sounds. Leaving a residential street behind Manly at six in the morning for a dawn drive is a very different social proposition in a Taycan than in a V8.
The trade is that if what you want from a performance car is noise and mechanical theatre, the Taycan does not provide it. That is a legitimate reason to choose something else, as long as it is a choice rather than an accident.
The Dry-Day Answer Is Different
On a genuinely dry day with warm tyres, the M3 Competition F80 is the better car on these roads and it is not particularly close.
It is more communicative, more adjustable and more rewarding to drive well, and the roads up here are exactly the kind that repay a car with that much precision. It also has four doors, five seats and a boot, so the rest of the weekend works.
The Mustang sits between the two. It is less sharp than the M3 and considerably more forgiving, and on a road where you are not going to use the top of the performance anyway, that trade often favours it.
The honest recommendation, and the one we will give you if you ask, is that the choice should follow the forecast rather than the price list. Tell us the date and what the weather is doing.
The Bridge Decides Your Morning
The Spit Bridge lifts on a published schedule for boat traffic, and when it does, everything stops. The queue that builds takes considerably longer to clear than the opening itself lasts.
This is entirely predictable and it still ruins plans, because a mapping application returns a travel time that assumes the bridge is down.
For a drive, the exposure is mostly at the start. If you are collecting or being delivered from the city side and your plan involves a dawn start, a bridge opening turns a seven o'clock departure into a quarter to eight, and on these roads that is the difference between empty and busy.
The practical answer is delivery. We bring the car to you on the peninsula, which removes the crossing from your morning entirely and puts it in ours.
Cold Tyres Are the Real Hazard
If there is one piece of advice on this page worth taking, it is this one, and it applies everywhere but matters most here.
Performance tyres have significantly less grip cold than warm, and the first few kilometres of any drive are cold. The roads immediately north of Manly start being interesting almost straight away, which means the temptation to start driving properly arrives before the tyres are ready.
Give it ten minutes of ordinary driving. That is genuinely all it takes, and the overwhelming majority of incidents in cars like these happen in the first fifteen minutes of a hire, on a road the driver does not know, on tyres that are not up to temperature.
The second point, related: be deliberate with the throttle at low speed in the wet. Roundabouts and junctions catch people out far more than corners do, because the power is so disproportionate to the situation.
Enforcement Up Here Is Heavy
The Northern Beaches roads are well known to enthusiasts and equally well known to police. Weekend mornings on the popular routes see consistent enforcement, including mobile units in places that are not obvious.
Fines follow the hire back to the named driver. That is not a hire charge, it is a consequence, and it is worth being realistic about.
The compensating fact is that these roads are technical rather than fast. The enjoyment is in the sequence of corners rather than in speed, and almost all of it is available at the limit posted. That is genuinely true here in a way it is not on a highway.
Booking, Age and the Numbers
The minimum driver age on the Performance cars is 20 with a full licence, rather than the 25 that applies to Exotic, Supercar and every BMW M3. Young Driver Cover is +25% of the daily hire for drivers under 25 and does not apply at 25 or over.
Delivery across the Northern Beaches is priced by distance and shown with the hire, the bond and any cover before you pay. The bond is a hold on a card rather than a charge, and the damage excess is $5,000.
Tell us the departure time you actually want. A dawn start needs the car there the night before or very early, and that is easy to arrange with notice and awkward without it.
Where to Stop, and Why It Matters
A drive on the Northern Beaches works better with a destination than without one, and the reason is practical rather than romantic.
These roads are technical and demanding to drive well, and forty minutes of concentration is genuinely tiring in a way that a motorway hour is not. Driving out, stopping properly, and driving back is a better experience than a continuous loop, and it is safer.
The northern end of the beaches and the villages along the way give you plenty of options, and the ones with actual parking are considerably more use than the ones with a better view and nowhere to leave a wide car.
The practical filter is the same as everywhere else on the peninsula: somewhere you can park a low, wide car without a three-point turn in front of an audience. That rules out more places than you would think.
Going out early and stopping for breakfast rather than going out late and stopping for lunch is the better shape, because the roads are empty on the way out and merely busy on the way back rather than the reverse.
If the Weather Turns Mid-Hire
Sydney weather changes fast and the Northern Beaches is where that matters most, because the roads that are excellent dry are demanding wet.
If you have a rear-drive car and it starts raining properly, the sensible response is to change what you are doing rather than to continue more carefully. The greasy-surface problem under tree cover is not something that careful driving fully solves, particularly on a road you do not know.
There is no shortage of alternatives up here. The coast road north is far less technical than the inland routes and is perfectly pleasant in the wet. It is a genuinely good option rather than a consolation.
The forward-planning version of this is to look at the forecast when you choose the car rather than when you collect it. If the day is likely to be wet, the all-wheel-drive Taycan turns a compromised hire into an uncompromised one, and it costs nothing to ask us which is the better call for your date.

If the Porsche Taycan Turbo is booked
We never move you down a tier. If your dates are taken, these are the performance cars we will offer instead, and we will tell you plainly if none of them is free rather than substituting something lesser on the day.

BMW M3 Competition F80
- 450hp

Guide rates, weekday winter pricing. Longer hires taper; the exact total for your dates is shown before you pay.
The bond held on your card equals the excess of the cover you choose. It is a pre-authorisation, released after return.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which roads are worth driving up here?
The sequence north from Manly through the headland roads and inland towards Ku-ring-gai is the best combination of corners and scenery within an hour of the city. It is technical rather than fast, which is what makes it interesting.
Is all-wheel drive worth it on the Northern Beaches?
More than anywhere else in Sydney. The good roads run under heavy tree cover and hold damp long after rain has stopped, so the surface is frequently greasy even on a dry day. If the forecast is at all uncertain, the Taycan is the sensible pick.
How much time should I allow for the Spit Bridge?
Check the opening schedule for your date rather than adding a generic buffer. It lifts for boat traffic and the queue behind an opening takes a long time to clear. It is the single most common reason a Northern Beaches plan runs late.
What is the minimum driver age?
20 with a full licence for the Performance cars other than the M3. The M3s, Exotic and Supercar require 25. Young Driver Cover is +25% of the daily hire for drivers under 25.
Do you deliver up here?
Yes, and it is almost always worth it. Sending someone over the bridge and back to collect a car costs well over an hour and exposes the whole plan to a bridge opening.
Is a loud car a problem in Manly?
It can be, particularly early in the morning in the residential streets behind the beach. If you are leaving at six for a dawn drive, the Taycan is silent and the V8s are emphatically not. Worth a thought if you are staying somewhere dense.
