  • Delivered across Sydney
  • Bond and fees shown before you pay
  • Never swapped to a lesser car

The single most common question we get about hiring a Tesla in Sydney is not about range or charging. It is about the doors. Specifically, whether the Model X falcon-wing rear doors can open in a tight underground car park at Westfield Parramatta. They can, but they need about a metre of clear space above and beside the car, and the sensors will stop them if something is in the way. That is question one of about twenty-five we field every week.

Booking and eligibility: the basics

Before we get into the long list, here is the short version of how a Tesla rental works with us. You book online, we confirm your details, and then we deliver the car to you anywhere in Sydney or you collect it from the base suburb. The Model 3 Performance lives at Parramatta. The Model Y RWD and the Model X P100D live at Merrylands. The new Model Y L is delivered anywhere in Sydney.

We keep the fleet small on purpose. Three cars are bookable right now, and a fourth is arriving. That means every car gets checked properly between hires and you are not picking up a car that has just done three back-to-back weekend trips.

If you want the full picture of how delivery works across the metro area, our guide Tesla Hire Near Me: How Delivery Anywhere in Sydney Works walks through the suburbs, the timing and what you need to have ready at handover.

Driver age, licences and who can drive

What is the minimum age to hire a Tesla?

It depends on the car. The 2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance has a minimum driver age of 20. The 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD has a minimum driver age of 25. The 2017 Tesla Model X P100D is chauffeur-only, so there is no self-drive age rule at all, because one of our drivers is at the wheel.

The Model Y L is arriving in the fleet on 26 September 2026. Age and licence requirements for that car are confirmed at booking, because we have not set a final rule for it yet.

Can I add a second driver?

Yes, as long as the second driver meets the same age and licence requirements as the primary driver. We need their licence details before the hire starts, not on the day. It takes a few minutes to add them and it means you can share the driving on a long day trip without any grey areas.

What licence do I need?

A full, unrestricted driver licence. Provisional or learner licences are not accepted for self-drive hires. If your licence is from overseas, we need to see it and, depending on the country, an international driving permit may also be required. We confirm this at booking.

Can I hire the Model X and drive it myself?

No. The Model X P100D is chauffeur-only. It is never self-drive. That is not a limitation we are hiding from you, it is simply how we run that car. You get the seven seats, the falcon-wing doors and the Ludicrous mode acceleration with one of our drivers, and you do not have to worry about parking it. If you want to drive yourself, the Model 3 Performance or the Model Y RWD are the cars to book.

The fleet: what we actually have

Here is the honest breakdown, because people often ask for a Tesla and then realise they wanted a specific one.

The 2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance is the driver's car. Dual-motor all-wheel drive, 370 kW, 660 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, 567 km of range, and Track Mode. It is based at Parramatta. Minimum age 20.

The 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD is the sensible one. Rear-wheel drive, 220 kW, 420 Nm, 0-100 in 5.9 seconds, 466 km of range, five seats, silver. Based at Merrylands. Minimum age 25.

The 2017 Tesla Model X P100D is the event car. Chauffeur-only, seven seats, 568 kW, 967 Nm, 0-100 in 3.1 seconds, 465 km of range, all-wheel drive, Ludicrous mode, falcon-wing rear doors, blue. Based at Merrylands.

And the Model Y L is the new one. Six seats, two individual second-row seats plus a two-seat third-row bench, a 3040 mm wheelbase that is 150 mm longer than the standard Model Y, dual-motor all-wheel drive, 378 kW combined, 590 Nm, a claimed 0-100 of 5.0 seconds, and a WLTP range of 681 km. Delivered anywhere in Sydney. You book it through the Tesla hub page.

Charging and range: what you need to know

Do I need to charge the car before I return it?

We ask you to return it with a reasonable charge, but we are not going to penalise you for a few percent either way. The details are on the car's page and in your booking confirmation. If you are doing a big day trip, a quick top-up at a Supercharger before you come back is the easiest way to keep it simple.

How do I find a Supercharger?

The car's navigation knows where they all are and will route you through one automatically if you set a destination beyond the range. If you want to plan ahead, our article Every Supercharger Between Sydney and Your Day-Trip Destination maps out the stops on the popular routes out of the city.

What if I have never charged an electric car before?

Then you are exactly who we wrote Your First 24 Hours in a Rented Tesla: Ten Things to Do Straight Away for. Plugging in is genuinely simple. The car tells you what to do. The first time takes a couple of minutes to get your head around, and after that it is like charging a phone.

Can I use a normal power point?

Technically yes, but it is slow. A standard household outlet will add range overnight, but it is not a practical way to top up during a busy day. For a hire, plan around Superchargers or destination chargers rather than a regular power point.

Does the range drop in winter?

Yes, as it does in every electric car. Cold mornings in Sydney are mild compared to other cities, but you will still see a modest reduction. The car's range estimate adjusts as you drive, so trust the number on the screen rather than the brochure figure.

Driving a Tesla in Sydney: what surprises people

When I drove the Model 3 Performance across the Spit Bridge and up the climb toward Seaforth, the thing that stood out was not the straight-line speed. It was how quiet the cabin was at low speed and how quickly the car gathered pace without any drama. You notice the torque most when you are merging, not when you are showing off.

The other thing people ask about is one-pedal driving. Lifting off the accelerator slows the car and puts energy back into the battery. It takes about ten minutes to get used to. After that, you will barely touch the brake pedal in traffic.

Autopilot is a driver aid, not a self-driving system. You keep your hands on the wheel and your attention on the road. It is excellent on the M2 and the M4 for holding a steady speed and lane position, and it makes a long drive to the Blue Mountains far less tiring.

If you want the full breakdown of what the Model X is like as a passenger vehicle, our Tesla Model X P100D Review: The Family SUV That Beats Supercars off the Line covers the ride, the doors and the space.

Are Teslas hard to park?

No, and the cameras make it easier than most cars. The Model 3 and Model Y are straightforward. The Model X is wider and the falcon-wing doors need clearance above, so we recommend checking the height of any car park before you enter. Most Sydney car parks are fine, but older ones with low ceilings are worth avoiding.

Do I need a special licence to drive a Tesla?

No. A full driver licence is all you need, the same as any other automatic car. The controls are different but not difficult. We give you a handover walkthrough before you drive away.

Insurance, tolls and the practical stuff

Is insurance included?

Yes, the hire includes insurance, and the details, including any excess, are shown on the car's page and in your booking total before you pay. We do not hide fees. What you see at checkout is what you pay.

What about tolls?

Sydney has a lot of toll roads, and the car will use them if you let it. Any tolls incurred during your hire are your responsibility. The easiest approach is to use an e-tag if you have one, or we can sort out the charges after the hire. We will explain this at handover.

Can I take the car outside Sydney?

Yes, within reason. Day trips to the Hunter Valley, the Southern Highlands or the Central Coast are all fine. If you are planning something further, let us know at booking so we can make sure the range and charging work for your route. The Model Y L, with its 681 km WLTP range, is the obvious choice for a longer trip.

What happens if I get a flat tyre?

Teslas do not carry a spare. They have a tyre repair kit and you can call us for assistance. Most punctures can be sorted quickly, and we will guide you through it. It is rare, but it does happen.

The Model Y L: what families keep asking

Since we confirmed the Model Y L is arriving, the questions have been steady. The big one is whether the third row is actually usable. It is a two-seat bench, so it is best for children or shorter adults on shorter trips. The second row is where the comfort is, with two individual seats and a long-wheelbase floor that gives real legroom.

The 3040 mm wheelbase is 150 mm longer than the standard Model Y, and you feel that in the back. For a family with two kids and occasional grandparents, it is a genuine six-seat option without stepping up to the Model X.

We have written more about it in Tesla Model Y L: What the Six-Seat Long-Wheelbase Y Means for Sydney Families. The short version: it fills the gap between the five-seat Model Y and the seven-seat Model X, and it has the longest range in the fleet.

You book the Model Y L through the Tesla hub page, not a car-specific page, because the car page is not live yet. Delivery is anywhere in Sydney.

Charging costs, bonds and what you pay

We do not publish rates here because they change with demand and season. The rate, the bond and every fee are shown on the car's page and in the booking total before you pay. That is the rule we work to. No surprises at pickup.

If you are comparing the three self-drive options, the chart below shows the key differences at a glance.

Comparison of the three self-drive Tesla models by minimum age, seats and 0-100 time
Minimum driver age, seats and 0-100 time for the three self-drive Teslas

One more thing on costs: charging at a Supercharger is not free, and the cost is passed through to you at the rate shown in the car's app. It is usually a small part of the overall hire, but it is worth knowing.

Common misconceptions we hear weekly

  • "Teslas drive themselves." No. Autopilot is a driver assistance system. You are always responsible for the car.
  • "The Model X is self-drive." Not with us. It is chauffeur-only, always.
  • "I need to install an app to charge." No. The car handles it, and you can pay through the car's system.
  • "The range is always what the sticker says." It varies with driving style, load and temperature, like any car's fuel consumption.
  • "I can pick up from anywhere." We deliver anywhere in Sydney, or you collect from Parramatta or Merrylands depending on the car.

How to book and what happens next

Booking is online. Choose your car, choose your dates, and tell us where you want it delivered. We confirm your licence and eligibility, then we lock in the delivery window.

If you are not sure which car suits your trip, start with the Tesla hub page. It lists every car in the fleet, including the Model Y L, and links to the individual pages for the Model 3 Performance, Model Y RWD and Model X P100D.

We answer messages during business hours and we aim to get back to you the same day. If your question is not in this list, ask us. We would rather answer it before you book than have you wondering.
