A meaningful number of our M3 bookings are specifically for photography - content creators, car photographers, and people simply wanting good images of themselves with a serious car. This is the practical guide to doing it properly.

Tell us the shot list
We can suggest which of our four M3s and which locations suit your specific concept before you book.
Why This Is a Genuine Part of Our Bookings
It is worth saying plainly: photography and content creation bookings are a real and regular part of what we do, not an edge case we are working out on the fly. Car photographers, content creators and people wanting genuinely good images with a serious car book our M3s specifically for this purpose regularly enough that it is worth its own honest guide.
Which of Our Four Suits Which Concept
The tuned F80 carries a genuine story - a Stage 1 car making around 600 horsepower - which works well for content specifically about performance, tuning culture or anything wanting a talking point beyond the visual. It photographs with real presence, and the story behind it is worth including in captions or accompanying text if that is the kind of content you are producing.

The stock F80 is the most immediately recognisable "M3" silhouette in the fleet - clean, unmodified, exactly what most people picture when they hear the model name. If the shot needs to read clearly as an M3 without any explanation, this is the safer choice.
The G80 Competition and G80 xDrive are the current shape, and the obvious choice if the concept is specifically about contemporary design or current-model content rather than a more classic or nostalgic feel.
Locations Worth Considering
The right location depends entirely on the concept, but a few general patterns hold across most of the shoots we have supported.
Clean, industrial or car-park settings tend to work well when the car itself is the subject - the background stays out of the way and the M3's own lines and stance carry the image. This is the more forgiving option if you are working to a tight schedule, since these locations are generally straightforward to access without extensive planning.
A scenic road setting - covered more broadly in our best Sydney roads article - suits a more lifestyle-oriented shoot, where the driving and the destination are as much a part of the story as the car itself. These take more planning around timing and light, but produce genuinely different, more atmospheric results.
Tell us the concept when you book and we are happy to suggest specific locations that suit it, based on what has worked for previous shoots.
Timing and Light
Standard photography advice applies as much to a car shoot as to any other kind: the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset produce noticeably better light than the middle of the day, particularly for anything involving reflective paintwork, which the M3's body panels have in abundance.
Because hire is priced by the day rather than by the hour, there is no reason not to plan around the light rather than around a booking window. Collect early for a sunrise shoot, or hold the car through the afternoon for golden hour, without any additional charge for the hours in between when the car is simply parked and waiting.
What You Can and Cannot Do
The named driver on the booking has to be the person actually driving the car at all times, including for any moving or rolling shots. We cannot authorise a different driver mid-shoot, including a photographer or crew member taking the wheel for a specific angle, regardless of how briefly.
Static shots and driving within normal road rules are both straightforward. Anything requiring the car to be driven off a public road, at a closed location, or in a manner that would not be legal on an ordinary drive is a different conversation - raise it with us specifically before booking rather than assuming it is covered by a standard hire.
Keeping the Car Presentable
A light clean before or during a shoot is fine, provided it does not risk the paintwork or interior - avoid anything abrasive or unfamiliar products, and ask us first if you are planning anything beyond a standard wash. We would rather answer that question in advance than have it become an issue at return.
Booking It Properly
Tell us the concept, the rough shot list and the locations you are considering when you book. It helps us confirm the right car for the day and flag anything - a particular location's access, a specific timing constraint - worth knowing in advance rather than discovering on the shoot day itself.

Working With a Professional Crew
For a larger production - a proper crew rather than a single photographer - a few additional things are worth arranging in advance rather than discovering on the day.
If the shoot involves multiple locations, confirm the overall itinerary with us so we can advise on realistic timing between them and flag anything about access or parking at each site that might affect the schedule. If the shoot is commercial - for a brand, a publication, or paid content beyond personal use - mention that specifically when you book, since it is worth a direct conversation about what that involves for the hire itself rather than assuming a standard personal-use booking covers it identically.
We are generally accommodating of professional shoots and have supported a genuine range of them, from single-photographer personal projects through to larger commercial productions. The key is telling us the actual scope in advance rather than us discovering it is a bigger production than a standard booking implied.
Getting the Reflections and Details Right
A few practical notes specific to photographing a car well, based on what tends to produce the best results across the shoots we have supported.
Overcast or softly lit conditions are often more forgiving for capturing paint and reflections cleanly than harsh direct sunlight, which can produce distracting hotspots on the bodywork that are difficult to correct afterward. If the shoot's success depends heavily on the car's paint and lines reading cleanly, a bright but overcast day is frequently a better choice than the golden-hour advice given elsewhere in this cluster, which suits a more atmospheric, lifestyle-oriented shoot rather than a clean product-style one.
Knowing which of these two approaches your concept actually needs, before the shoot day rather than during it, saves a great deal of frustration if the weather does not cooperate with an assumption nobody stated clearly in advance.
Insurance for Commercial Work
If the shoot is commercial rather than personal, it is worth a direct conversation with us about what that means for the hire terms specifically, since a commercial production sometimes carries different considerations from an ordinary personal booking. Raising this upfront, before the shoot day, avoids any ambiguity about what is and is not covered under the standard hire arrangement.
What We Ask in Return
If you are able to share the finished images or content afterward, we would genuinely appreciate it - not as a condition of the booking, but because we like seeing what people create with the cars, and it occasionally helps us make better location and car suggestions for the next person planning something similar. There is no obligation attached to this; it is simply an open invitation if you are happy to share.
Booking With Enough Notice
Photography and content bookings benefit from more advance notice than an ordinary drive, particularly if the concept depends on a specific car, a specific location's availability, or particular light conditions that only occur on certain days. Where possible, book further ahead than you might for a purely recreational hire, and build in a backup date if the shoot depends heavily on weather.
A week's notice is generally comfortable for a standard shoot; a month or more is worth aiming for if the concept is elaborate or weather-dependent. Weather-dependent concepts in particular benefit from this lead time, since it gives you room to reschedule around a poor forecast without the whole project falling through if the first attempt does not go to plan. Give yourself that margin and the rest of the shoot day tends to go far more smoothly than a tightly compressed, no-backup plan ever does. It is a small amount of extra planning that pays for itself many times over on the day. Book with that in mind and both the shoot and the booking process itself tend to go noticeably better for everyone involved, us included. Everything about which of our four M3s might suit your specific concept is on the M3 hub, linked throughout this article. We are always happy to talk through the specifics before you commit to anything.

If the BMW M3 Competition F80 is booked
We never move you down a tier. If your dates are taken, these are the performance cars we will offer instead, and we will tell you plainly if none of them is free rather than substituting something lesser on the day.
The tuned F80
- Stage 1
- Distinctive
- White
- $530/day
The one with a genuine story behind it - a Stage 1 car worth mentioning in captions, and a stance that photographs with real presence.
G80 Competition xDrive
- Current shape
- 510hp
- Modern
- $850/day
The newest, most contemporary shape in the fleet if the shoot is going for a current, up-to-date look rather than a classic one.
Day rate, not an hourly surcharge
Hire is priced by the day. A morning shoot and an afternoon return costs the same as using it all day.
Guide rates, weekday winter pricing. Longer hires taper; the exact total for your dates is shown before you pay.
The bond held on your card equals the excess of the cover you choose. It is a pre-authorisation, released after return.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you charge extra for photography use?
No. Hire is priced by the day regardless of what you do with the car during that time, provided it is used and returned within the agreed condition. There is no separate photography surcharge.
Which of your four M3s photographs best?
Depends entirely on the concept. The tuned F80 has genuine character and a story worth mentioning. The G80 xDrive is the most current, contemporary shape. The stock F80 is the most universally recognisable 'M3' silhouette if that specific familiarity matters to the shot.
Can we shoot the car moving, not just static?
Within road rules and with the named driver actually driving - we cannot authorise anyone else operating the vehicle, including for a rolling shot from another car. Static and slow-roll shots on public roads are the practical options.
Is there a location you would specifically recommend?
It depends on the concept, but industrial and car park locations with clean backgrounds tend to work well for the car itself, while a scenic road location suits a more lifestyle-oriented shoot. Tell us the concept and we can suggest specific spots.
Can we clean or detail the car for a shoot?
A light clean, yes, provided it does not involve products or methods that could damage the paint or interior. Ask us first rather than assuming, particularly for anything beyond a standard wash.
How long can we have the car for a shoot?
As long as the hire period covers - a single day is the usual arrangement, and longer hires taper in price if the shoot needs more than one day.
