Why Electric Car Hire in Sydney Makes Sense Right Now

Sydney is a city built for electric driving. The daily commute is often under 50 km, and the average speed is low enough that regenerative braking does most of the work. If you are renting a car for a weekend away, the story is even better: the Tesla Model 3 Performance in our fleet has a 567 km range, which is more than enough for a return trip to the Hunter Valley or the Southern Highlands without charging.

We have been running electric cars in our Sydney hire fleet for years, and the feedback is consistent. People love the instant torque, the quiet cabin, and the fact they never have to visit a petrol station. The main hesitation is charging, which is why we wrote a separate guide on Charging a Rented Tesla in Sydney: Superchargers, Home Plugs and What It Costs. That article covers the practical side in detail; here we focus on the bigger picture.

The Drive Tribe Tesla Fleet at a Glance

We keep things simple. Our electric fleet is all Tesla, and every car is chosen because it does a specific job well. Here is how they compare on the numbers that matter.

Table comparing key specs of the Tesla Model 3 Performance, Model Y, Model X P100D and Model Y L
Key specs of the Drive Tribe Tesla fleet

All four cars are available for self-drive hire except the Model X, which is chauffeur-only. That is not a limitation; it is a feature. If you want to arrive at a wedding or a corporate event without worrying about parking, the Model X with its falcon-wing doors and Ludicrous mode makes an entrance that no other car in our fleet can match.

Model 3 Performance: The Driver's Choice

The 2020 Model 3 Performance is the car I reach for when I want to drive for the sake of driving. It has 370 kW and 660 Nm, which translates to a 0-100 km/h time of 3.3 seconds. That is quick enough to surprise a lot of sports cars at the lights. It also has Track Mode, which adjusts the power delivery and stability control for circuit use. You do not need to take it to a track to enjoy it, though. On the Spit Bridge climb, the way it puts power down out of the corners is genuinely impressive.

The Model 3 Performance is based in Parramatta and can be delivered anywhere in Sydney. Minimum driver age is 20, which makes it one of the most accessible performance cars you can hire in Australia. If you want to know more about the interior technology, read Inside the Model 3 Performance: Screen, Autopilot and the Stuff Nobody Explains.

Model Y: The Everyday Electric

The 2025 Model Y RWD is the sensible choice for most people. It has 220 kW, 420 Nm, and a 0-100 time of 5.9 seconds, which is still brisk. The range is 466 km, and it has five seats and a large boot. It is based in Merrylands and is available for self-drive hire to drivers aged 25 and over.

I have used the Model Y for everything from airport runs to a day trip to the Blue Mountains. It is comfortable, quiet, and the rear seats fold flat for bulky loads. If you are hiring for a family holiday, this is the one I would recommend.

Model X P100D: The Chauffeur Experience

The 2017 Model X P100D is in a different league. With 568 kW and 967 Nm, it hits 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds, which is supercar territory. It has seven seats, falcon-wing rear doors, and Ludicrous mode. It is chauffeur-only, which means one of our professional drivers handles the wheel. That makes it perfect for weddings, corporate events, or a special night out. There is no minimum age for passengers because you are not driving.

The Model X is based in Merrylands and can be delivered anywhere in Sydney. For more on how it works as a family car, see Seven Seats and a Frunk: The Model X as a Family Day-Out Car.

Model Y L: The Newcomer

The Model Y L is arriving in our fleet on 26 September 2026, and it is already bookable via the Tesla hub page. It is a long-wheelbase version of the Model Y, with 3040 mm between the axles, which is 150 mm more than the standard car. That extra space goes into a six-seat layout: two individual seats in the second row and a two-seat bench in the third. It has dual-motor all-wheel drive, 378 kW combined, 590 Nm, and a claimed 0-100 time of 5.0 seconds. The WLTP range is 681 km, which is the longest in our fleet.

We do not have a dedicated car page for the Model Y L yet, so all bookings go through the Tesla hub. Age and licence requirements are confirmed at booking.

Charging an Electric Car in Sydney

Charging is the number one question we get from first-time electric hirers. The good news is that Sydney has a dense public charging network, and Tesla's Superchargers are the fastest and most reliable option. You do not need a special app or membership; the car's navigation system knows where they are and will precondition the battery so you get the fastest possible charge.

For a full breakdown of costs and locations, read our guide on Charging a Rented Tesla in Sydney: Superchargers, Home Plugs and What It Costs. In short: a 20-minute stop at a Supercharger typically adds enough range for a week of city driving. If you are staying somewhere with a power point, you can trickle charge overnight, which is slower but very convenient.

We include a charging cable with every hire, and our team will walk you through the process when you pick up the car. It is simpler than you think.

What It Costs to Hire an Electric Car in Sydney

We do not publish rates on this page because they change with demand and season. The rate, bond, and any fees are shown clearly on each car's page and in your booking total before you pay. That way there are no surprises.

When you compare electric car hire to a petrol equivalent, remember that electricity is cheaper than petrol per kilometre, and you will not be paying for fuel at all if you charge at a free public station. We also do not charge a cleaning fee for normal use, and there is no hidden surcharge for using a Supercharger; you simply pay for what you use through your Tesla account, which we link to your booking.

Delivery and Pickup Across Sydney

We deliver anywhere in Sydney. That includes the CBD, the Eastern Suburbs, the Inner West, the North Shore, the Northern Beaches, and as far west as Penrith. If you are closer to our bases, you can also collect from Parramatta (Model 3 Performance) or Merrylands (Model Y and Model X). Delivery is arranged at a time that suits you, and we will show you the car's features before we hand over the keys.

For chauffeur-driven hires, we come to you. Whether it is a wedding in Mosman or a corporate event in the city, our driver will arrive early and wait for you.

Which Tesla Should You Hire?

It depends on your plans. Here is a quick guide:

  • Model 3 Performance: Best for couples or solo drivers who want a fun, fast car for a weekend away. Minimum age 20.
  • Model Y: Best for small families or groups of up to five. Minimum age 25.
  • Model Y L: Best for larger families or groups of up to six who need extra space and maximum range. Book via the Tesla hub.
  • Model X P100D: Best for special occasions where you want to arrive in style without driving. Chauffeur-only, seven seats.

If you are still unsure, our team is happy to talk it through. You can reach us through the contact page on the website.

Charging on the Go: What to Expect

One of the joys of electric car hire in Sydney is that you can drive past every petrol station. But you do need to plan for charging on longer trips. The car's navigation will route you via Superchargers if needed, and it will tell you how long to charge for. On a recent drive to the Southern Highlands, I stopped at a Supercharger in Campbelltown for 15 minutes, added about 200 km of range, and had time for a coffee. That is the typical experience.

If you are heading further afield, say to Jervis Bay or Port Stephens, there are Superchargers along the way. The Model Y L's 681 km range means you might not need to stop at all.

Insurance and Peace of Mind

All our hires include comprehensive insurance. The excess and bond are shown on the car's page and in your booking total. We also offer additional protection options at checkout. Because our cars are fitted with Tesla's advanced safety features, including Autopilot, the risk of an accident is lower, but it is good to know you are covered either way.

We also ask that you treat the car as you would your own. That means no smoking, no pets, and no off-road driving. Normal cleaning is included; excessive dirt may incur a fee, which is explained in the terms.

Photoshoots and Content Creation

Teslas are popular for photoshoots and video content because they look futuristic and photograph well. If you are hiring for a shoot, the Model 3 Performance in white or the Model X in blue are the most requested. We can arrange delivery to a location and provide a driver if needed. For more on this, read Teslas for Photoshoots and Content in Sydney: Which Model Photographs Best.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far can I drive an electric car in Sydney on one charge?

It depends on the model. The Model 3 Performance has a range of 567 km, the Model Y has 466 km, the Model X P100D has 465 km, and the Model Y L has 681 km. In real-world Sydney driving, you can expect to achieve close to these figures, especially in mild weather.

Where can I charge a hired Tesla in Sydney?

Tesla's Supercharger network is the fastest option, with locations across Sydney and along major highways. You can also use destination chargers at hotels and shopping centres, or a standard power point at home. The car's navigation system will guide you to the nearest charger.

Do I need a special licence to hire an electric car?

No, a standard Australian driver's licence is fine for self-drive hires. Minimum age requirements apply: 20 for the Model 3 Performance and 25 for the Model Y. For chauffeur-driven hires, no licence is needed as you are not driving.

Can I take an electric hire car outside Sydney?

Yes, you can drive anywhere in New South Wales, and even interstate, as long as you plan your charging stops. The Supercharger network covers most major routes. Just let us know your itinerary so we can help with planning.

What happens if I run out of charge?

It is unlikely if you follow the car's navigation prompts, but if it happens, call our roadside assistance number (provided at pickup) and we will arrange a charge. It is much like running out of petrol, but you can avoid it by charging when the battery gets low.
