  • Never swapped to a lesser car

A Tesla Model X P100D opens its rear doors in about six seconds, and for a photographer that is six seconds of a shape no other SUV in Sydney can copy. We hire Teslas to shoots, music videos and content days across the city, and the question we get most is simple: which one actually looks best on camera? The answer depends on whether you need motion, light or sheer presence.

Why a Tesla Is an Easy Camera Subject

Most cars fight a photographer. Paint throws hotspots, grilles swallow light, and engines force you to work around noise and fumes in tight locations. A Tesla removes most of that friction. There is no exhaust to position around, no idle rumble under your audio track, and the flat surfaces of the bodywork behave predictably under both soft overcast light and hard afternoon sun.

The other advantage is stillness. A parked Tesla can sit with the climate running and the screens alive without an engine idling, which matters when you are shooting in a laneway behind a Surry Hills warehouse or on a quiet street in Balmain and do not want to draw a crowd. You can move it a metre, stop, shoot, and move again without the theatre of starting a motor.

If you are new to the brand, our Tesla hire Sydney hub explains the fleet, the delivery areas and how self-drive bookings work before you commit to a model.

The Three Teslas We Hire, and What Each One Does on Camera

We run three cars that get used for shoots, and they are genuinely different tools. One is a sharp compact performance sedan, one is a clean family crossover, and one is a chauffeur-driven seven-seat SUV with the most theatrical doors on the road.

2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance: The Motion Car

The Model 3 Performance is the smallest and lowest of the three, and that is exactly why photographers like it. A low roofline and short overhangs read well from a low camera angle, and the car looks planted even when it is standing still. Dual-motor all-wheel drive, 370 kW and 660 Nm mean it can be positioned quickly and precisely, and the 0-100 km/h figure of 3.3 seconds makes it the right choice when the brief calls for a rolling shot with real acceleration behind it.

It is based at Parramatta and can be delivered anywhere in Sydney, or collected from base. Minimum driver age is 20, and it has Track Mode, which is useful if your content involves a closed-circuit setting rather than a street. Full specs and the booking page are here: Tesla Model 3 Performance 2020.

When I drove it on the climb up to the Spit Bridge, the thing that struck me was how little drama there is in the way it gathers speed. For a camera car that is a gift, because the movement is smooth and repeatable rather than jerky, and you can run the same pass again and again without the car behaving differently.

2025 Tesla Model Y RWD: The Clean Daylight Car

The Model Y is silver, five seats, rear-wheel drive, 220 kW and 420 Nm, with a 0-100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds and 466 km of range. It is not the fastest car we hire, and it does not need to be. What it offers a shoot is a tall, simple silhouette and a bright, neutral body colour that reflects sky and building facades instead of fighting them.

For product and lifestyle work, that silver paint is easier to light than a dark car, because it holds a highlight without turning into a mirror. The cabin is also the roomiest of the two self-drive cars, which makes it the practical pick if you are shooting people inside the car as well as the car itself. Minimum driver age is 25, it is based at Merrylands, and the page is Tesla Model Y RWD 2025.

2017 Tesla Model X P100D: The Presence Car

The Model X P100D is the one people stop and stare at, and it is chauffeur only, so a Drive Tribe driver is behind the wheel for the whole booking. That is not a limitation for a shoot, it is a feature: you get a professional moving the car into position while your crew stays on the camera.

Seven seats, all-wheel drive, 568 kW, 967 Nm and a 0-100 km/h time of 3.1 seconds in a vehicle this size is genuinely absurd, and Ludicrous mode is available. The blue paint and the falcon-wing rear doors are the two reasons it books out for music videos and fashion content. There is no minimum driver age because the passenger is not driving. See the Tesla Model X P100D 2017 page for the details.

Which Tesla Photographs Best? A Straight Comparison

There is no single winner, because the right car depends on the shot. The table below sets out the three cars by what they actually give a photographer.

Comparison of the three Drive Tribe Teslas by seats, drive type and the kind of shoot each one suits
Each Drive Tribe Tesla suits a different kind of shoot

Read that table as a starting point rather than a rule. A brand with a dark, moody brief will get more from the Model 3 Performance than the silver Model Y, even though the Y is easier to light in general.

Matching the Car to the Brief

Automotive and motion content

Book the Model 3 Performance. Low, wide and quick, with 3.3 seconds to 100 km/h and Track Mode if you are shooting somewhere private. It is the only car in the fleet that suits a proper performance sequence, and the Parramatta base makes it easy to collect early before the light turns harsh.

Lifestyle, fashion and interiors

The Model Y is the better default. Five seats, a bright silver body and a tall glasshouse give you options for shooting through the windows, and the cabin is comfortable enough that talent will not be squirming after an hour. If you are weighing the two self-drive cars against each other, our breakdown of Model Y vs Model 3: Which Tesla to Rent in Sydney covers the practical differences in more depth.

Music videos, events and hero shots

The Model X P100D is the answer. Falcon-wing doors that open in roughly six seconds give you a reveal that no conventional SUV can match, and the chauffeur arrangement means the car can be repositioned instantly without your director needing to drive. Seven seats also means you can move a small crew and gear in the same vehicle.

Where to Shoot a Tesla in Sydney

Sydney rewards planning. The light on the harbour at first light is soft and even, and the sandstone and concrete around Walsh Bay and Kirribilli give you neutral backdrops that suit a silver or blue car. For a darker, more graphic look, the industrial streets around Alexandria and Marrickville work well in the middle of the day when the sun is high and the shadows are hard.

The Blue Mountains and the roads west of the city are the obvious choice for motion work, and you will want to know where you can top up before you go. Our guide to every Supercharger between Sydney and your day-trip destination maps the charging stops so a shoot day does not turn into a hunt for power.

One practical note: shoots that involve closing a road, using a car park after hours, or filming in a national park need permission from the relevant council or authority. We can deliver the car, but the paperwork for the location is yours, and it is worth sorting before the day rather than on it.

How the Booking Works for a Shoot Day

We deliver anywhere in Sydney, or you collect from the car's base suburb: Parramatta for the Model 3 Performance, Merrylands for the Model Y and the Model X. Delivery means the car arrives where your crew already is, which saves you moving people and gear across town at dawn.

Self-drive bookings are available on the Model 3 Performance and the Model Y, with minimum driver ages of 20 and 25 respectively. The Model X P100D is chauffeur only, with a Drive Tribe driver for the duration. The rate, the bond and every fee are shown on the car's page and in the booking total before you pay, so there are no surprises on the day.

If you are budgeting a two-day content trip, our line-by-line comparison of Tesla rental vs petrol performance car: the weekend cost is worth reading before you decide how many days you need.

Getting the Most Out of the Car on Camera

  • Charge the night before. A full battery means you can run the climate and the screens all day without thinking about range.
  • Bring a polarising filter. Flat Tesla panels respond well to one, especially on the silver Model Y.
  • Shoot the Model X doors early in the day. The reveal is the shot, and you want the best light on it, not the last ten minutes of a long setup.
  • Plan your first and last location around traffic. Moving a car between suburbs at peak hour eats shooting time.
  • Keep the interior tidy. Tesla cabins are minimalist, so anything left on a seat reads clearly on camera.

If your shoot spans a full weekend rather than a single day, our account of a weekend in a Model Y, Friday delivery to Monday collection shows how that schedule actually runs.

What About the Model Y L?

The six-seat long-wheelbase Model Y, often called the Model Y L, is a newer variant with a longer body and a third row. It is not in our fleet, and we cannot take a booking for one today. We write about it only so you know what it is if a client or a director asks. If it does arrive in Sydney, it would sit between the Model Y and the Model X on space, and we would list it on the Tesla hub when that happens. For now, if you need seven seats or a third row, the Model X P100D is the car to book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hire a Tesla in Sydney just for a photoshoot?

Yes. We hire the Model 3 Performance and the Model Y for self-drive bookings, and the Model X P100D with a Drive Tribe chauffeur. You can book for a single day, and we deliver anywhere in Sydney or you can collect from the base suburb.

Which Tesla looks best on camera?

It depends on the shot. The Model 3 Performance suits motion and automotive work, the silver Model Y is easiest to light for lifestyle and interiors, and the Model X P100D with its falcon-wing doors gives you the strongest hero image for music videos and events.

Do I need a special licence to drive a Tesla for a shoot?

No. The Model 3 Performance and Model Y are ordinary self-drive bookings with a standard licence, subject to minimum driver ages of 20 and 25 respectively. The Model X P100D is chauffeur only, so you never drive it yourself.

Can the car be delivered to my shoot location?

Yes. We deliver anywhere in Sydney. If you prefer to collect, the Model 3 Performance is based at Parramatta and the Model Y and Model X are based at Merrylands. Delivery means the car arrives where your crew already is.

Is the Model Y L available to hire?

Not yet. The six-seat long-wheelbase Model Y is not in our fleet and we cannot take a booking for one. If it arrives in Sydney we will list it on the Tesla hub. If you need a third row today, book the seven-seat Model X P100D.

How far in advance should I book a Tesla for a content day?

Book as early as you can, especially for the Model X P100D, which is the most requested car for music videos and events. Weekend dates and peak production periods fill first, so confirm the model and the delivery suburb before you lock in your crew.
