The AMG GT is what happens when Mercedes stops trying to make a comfortable car and builds a proper front-mid-engined sports car instead. The bonnet is absurdly long, the cabin sits almost over the rear axle, and the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 lives entirely behind the front wheels. It is the most old-fashioned layout in our fleet and it produces the best-balanced car we have.

Ours is the base GT at 350kW, which people occasionally treat as the disappointing one. It is not. It is the one with the least aggressive suspension and the most usable power delivery, which on real Sydney roads makes it faster and considerably more pleasant than the harder-edged versions.

What It Is Actually Like in Sydney
The V8 is the character of the car
The M178 is a hot-vee engine, meaning the turbochargers sit inside the V rather than outside it. The practical result is almost no lag and a hard, flat, angry noise that is completely distinct from the Italian cars. It does not shriek. It bellows. On overrun through a tunnel it is genuinely one of the best-sounding cars on sale in the last decade.
It is a real sports car, not a soft GT
The transaxle layout puts the gearbox at the rear, which gives near-perfect weight distribution. You feel it in the way the car turns in. Where a lot of fast Mercedes feel like they are managing their own weight, this one changes direction properly. The Old Pacific Highway is where you will notice it.
Visibility takes adjusting to
You sit low and far back with a very long bonnet ahead of you. Judging the front corners takes a few kilometres. Once it clicks it is fine, but do not make your first manoeuvre a tight reverse park in Bondi on a Saturday.
The roads worth the booking
Old Pacific Highway north, the Royal National Park south, and the run out to Kangaroo Valley if you have a full day. Rear-wheel drive and 630Nm means the wet demands more care than the all-wheel-drive cars in our fleet.
Things You Should Know Before You Book
Two seats and a hatchback boot that is genuinely usable, which sets it apart from most two-seat performance cars. A weekend away for two works.
It is wide. Not low in the way the McLaren is, but wide enough that older Sydney car parks and narrow lanes need attention.
Rear-wheel drive with this much torque is not a car to be casual with in heavy rain. It has traction control and it works, but respect it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I collect it?
Our Mascot depot, closest to the airport and about 8km from the Sydney CBD, or our Parramatta depot for the west. We also deliver across the Sydney metro area through our host network, including Bankstown.
What licence and age do I need?
A full Australian or recognised overseas licence held for the required minimum period. Provisional licences are not accepted. Additional age and driving-history requirements apply to this tier and are confirmed before your booking is accepted.
Is there a security bond?
Yes, a refundable hold placed at pickup and released after return and inspection. The amount is shown before you confirm.
Is it suitable for a wedding?
For the couple, yes, and it photographs beautifully. But it is strictly two seats, so it will not carry a bridal party. Pair it with something larger for the rest of the group.
Can I take it on a track?
No. Circuit and track use is not permitted on any of our vehicles.
Can I take it interstate?
With prior written approval, noted on your booking so the kilometre allowance and roadside cover are set correctly.
