- Never swapped to a lesser car
Nothing else in our fleet arrives the way a G-Wagon arrives. It is a car that has been in continuous production since 1979, still looks like a military vehicle, still has door handles that shut with a rifle-bolt clunk, and now has a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 430kW. It should not work. It is one of the most requested vehicles we have.

The 2018 model is the important one. That was the year Mercedes finally redesigned the G properly for the first time in nearly four decades: independent front suspension, a wider body, and a cabin lifted from the S-Class. They kept the ladder frame, the three locking differentials and the shape. The result drives like a modern SUV without losing any of the reason people wanted it.

What It Is Actually Like in Sydney
It is genuinely, absurdly fast
4.5 seconds to 100km/h in a two-and-a-half tonne box with the aerodynamics of a filing cabinet is a deeply strange sensation. There is no sense of the car getting lighter or lower as it accelerates. It simply leaves, upright and level, while the side exhausts make a noise that sets off car alarms. It is very hard not to laugh.

The presence is the product
Let us be direct about why people book this car: it is the single most recognisable luxury vehicle in Australia, and it makes an entrance in a way nothing else does. Weddings, formals, arrivals, photo shoots. If the point of the booking is being seen arriving, the G-Wagon is the answer and everything else is a compromise.
Five real seats and a proper boot
This is the practical exotic. Four adults travel in genuine comfort, the boot takes real luggage, and the side-hinged rear door is enormously convenient once you learn to park with a metre of clearance behind you.
It will actually go off-road, though you may not
Three locking differentials and a low-range transfer case mean this is a serious 4WD, not a soft-roader with a badge. Note that off-road and beach use requires approval on your booking beforehand, and on a vehicle of this value we assess those requests carefully.
Things You Should Know Before You Book
It is big and it is square. Sydney's older underground car parks, particularly in the eastern suburbs, will test you. The 360-degree camera is excellent and you should use it rather than your mirrors.
Fuel consumption from a 430kW V8 in a brick is what you would expect. Use 98 and budget generously.
The upright windscreen means wind noise at highway speed is more noticeable than in a conventional SUV. It is character, not a fault, but it is there.

If the G-Wagon is booked
We never move you down a tier. If your dates are taken, these are the exotic cars we will offer instead, and we will tell you plainly if none of them is free rather than substituting something lesser on the day.

The bond held on your card equals the excess of the cover you choose. It is a pre-authorisation, released after return.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I collect it?
Our Mascot depot, closest to the airport and roughly 8km from the Sydney CBD, or our Parramatta depot if you are coming from the west. We also deliver across the Sydney metro area through our host network, including Bankstown, which is the usual choice for weddings and events.
Is it good for a wedding?
It is one of our two most-booked wedding vehicles. Five seats means the couple plus attendants, the height makes getting in and out in formalwear far easier than a low sports car, and it photographs extremely well against both city and coastal backdrops.
What licence and age do I need?
A full Australian or recognised overseas licence held for the required minimum period. Provisional licences are not accepted. Additional requirements apply at this tier and are confirmed before your booking is accepted.
Is there a security bond?
Yes, a refundable hold placed at pickup and released after the vehicle is returned and inspected. The amount is shown before you confirm.
Can I take it off-road or to the beach?
Only with prior written approval on your booking. The vehicle is more than capable; the approval exists because of what it is worth.
Can I take it interstate?
With prior written approval, so we can set the kilometre allowance and roadside cover correctly.
