The 2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance is officially rated at 567 km of range, but that number comes from a lab, not from the M4 at 110 km/h with the air conditioning on. In Sydney, where motorways, toll roads and hilly coastal runs all pull the figure in different directions, the real-world model 3 performance range is closer to 450 km in mixed driving. We hired one from our Parramatta base for a week of ordinary Sydney trips to see exactly where the electrons go.

Why the official 567 km figure is a starting point, not a promise
Tesla's 567 km range figure for the 2020 Model 3 Performance is measured on a standardised test cycle. It is useful for comparing one electric car with another, but it does not account for Sydney's specific mix of steep grades, stop-start traffic and motorway speeds. The car has a 75 kWh battery pack and dual motors producing 370 kW and 660 Nm, so it has plenty of performance on tap. The trick is that performance and range pull against each other.
When I collected the car from Parramatta, the dash showed a full charge and an estimated range that matched the official number almost exactly. Within twenty minutes of merging onto the M4, that estimate had dropped by more than the distance I had covered. That is normal for any EV, but it is worth understanding before you plan a day out.
What we actually saw on Sydney roads
Over a week of mixed driving, the Model 3 Performance returned roughly 450 km of real-world range per full charge. That included a run up the M2 to the Northern Beaches, a crawl through the CBD, a trip over the Spit Bridge and a steady motorway stint down the M5. The biggest single factor was speed. At a steady 100 km/h on the M5, consumption settled into a predictable rhythm. At 110 km/h on the M1, it climbed noticeably.
Around town, the car was remarkably efficient. Regenerative braking in stop-start traffic on Parramatta Road recovered energy that would otherwise be lost as heat. On the steep climb up to West Head in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, the car used more energy than the distance alone would suggest, but the descent back down added a meaningful amount back into the pack.
The lesson is simple: the model 3 performance range you experience will depend far more on your route and your right foot than on any official figure. If you stick to suburban streets and moderate speeds, you will get closer to the official number. If you spend the day on motorways or enjoying the acceleration, you will see it fall.
How Sydney's geography affects your range
Sydney is a city of ridges and waterways. The Harbour Bridge and the Anzac Bridge both involve climbs. The roads out to the Blue Mountains rise steadily for kilometres. Even a simple trip from Parramatta to Bondi involves a surprising amount of elevation change. Each of those climbs costs energy, and while some of it comes back on the descent, the round trip is never perfectly efficient.
Temperature matters too. Sydney winters are mild, but a cold morning will temporarily reduce range until the battery warms up. Summer heat is a bigger factor because the air conditioning has to work harder. On a 35 degree day, the climate control can draw a noticeable amount of power, especially if the car has been parked in the sun.
If you are planning a longer drive, it pays to think about the shape of your route. A loop that returns to your starting point will always be more efficient than a point-to-point trip that ends far from a charger. For a day trip to the Blue Mountains, for example, you can leave Parramatta with a full charge, drive up, and return with energy to spare, provided you are not treating every overtaking lane as a personal challenge.
Charging around Sydney: where and how fast
Sydney has a good spread of public charging, and the Model 3 Performance can use Tesla Superchargers as well as third-party networks. The car's navigation system will plan charging stops for you and precondition the battery so it accepts power as quickly as possible. On a Supercharger, the Model 3 Performance can add a substantial amount of range in the time it takes to buy a coffee and stretch your legs.
We often tell customers that the best charging strategy is to combine it with a break. Plug in, walk away, and come back to a car that is ready for the next leg. Trying to charge from empty to full on a road trip is rarely necessary and rarely quick. The sweet spot is to arrive with a moderate state of charge and leave before the charging speed tapers off.
For self-drive hires, the Model 3 Performance is based at Parramatta, which puts it close to the M4 and the M2. If you are heading south or east, you can top up before you leave or rely on the network along the way. The car's range estimate is generally accurate, though it can be optimistic if you have been driving gently and then switch to a more energetic style.
Driving style: the biggest variable you control
The Model 3 Performance has 370 kW and 660 Nm, and it will reach 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds. Using that performance is fun, but it is also the fastest way to watch the range estimate fall. I am not suggesting you drive it like a economy car, but it is worth knowing that a few full-throttle launches will have a measurable effect on your remaining range.
Track Mode, which this car has, is designed for circuit use and will naturally consume more energy. You would not use it on a public road, but it is worth mentioning because it shows how the car's character changes with the drive mode selected. In Chill mode, the throttle response is softer and the range estimate improves. In Standard, you get the full performance but also the full consumption.
One-pedal driving is your friend. The regenerative braking system is strong enough that you can modulate speed with the accelerator alone in most traffic. Doing so not only saves energy but also makes for a smoother drive. When I drove the car through the Lane Cove Tunnel and out onto the Gore Hill Freeway, I found that anticipating traffic and lifting early kept the consumption low without slowing me down.
Planning a Sydney day trip in a Model 3 Performance
Let us say you want to drive from Parramatta to Palm Beach and back. That is a round trip of roughly 90 km, with a mix of motorway and suburban roads. In the Model 3 Performance, you could do that trip several times over on a single charge. Even allowing for a detour to Manly and a stop for lunch, you would not need to charge.
A longer trip, such as Parramatta to Katoomba and back, is around 200 km. That is still comfortably within the car's real-world range, but it is worth checking the elevation profile. The climb up the Great Western Highway is steady, and if you are carrying passengers and luggage, the consumption will be higher. On the return, you will regain some energy on the descent. In practice, you would arrive home with a reasonable buffer.
For a full day out that includes the Royal National Park and the Grand Pacific Drive, you might cover 250 km or more. That is still achievable without charging, but if you are starting from a less than full battery, a top-up at a public charger in Sutherland or Wollongong would be sensible. The car's navigation will suggest stops if needed.
What about the Model 3 Performance's range in winter?
Sydney winters are mild compared with Europe or North America, but they still affect range. On a cold morning, the battery is less willing to accept a fast charge and the cabin heater draws power. You might see a reduction of around ten to fifteen percent in range on the coldest days, though it is hard to put an exact number on it because it depends on how long the car sits and how warm you want the cabin.
Preconditioning helps. If the car is plugged in, you can warm the cabin before you leave without using battery energy for that purpose. The Model 3 Performance does not have a heat pump in this generation, so the resistive heater is less efficient than newer systems. That is a small trade-off for the performance and the price point of this particular car.
In summer, the opposite is true. The air conditioning works hard, but the battery is at its happiest. On a hot day, you can expect range to be close to the real-world figure we observed in mixed driving, as long as you are not parked in the sun with the climate control running for long periods.
Charging speed and battery health on a 2020 Model 3 Performance
The 2020 Model 3 Performance uses a lithium-ion battery with a nickel-rich chemistry. It can accept high charging speeds, especially when the battery is warm and at a low state of charge. Tesla's Supercharger network in Sydney is well placed, with sites at locations such as Broadway, Chatswood and Macquarie Park, though the exact number of stalls and their availability changes over time.
Battery health is a consideration for any used EV. Our car is maintained to a high standard, and the range estimate reflects that. If you are hiring for a day or a weekend, you do not need to worry about long-term degradation. You just need to know that the car will do what the dashboard says it will do, provided you drive it sensibly.

Comparing the Model 3 Performance with other Teslas for range
The Model 3 Performance has a 567 km official range. The 2025 Model Y RWD has a 466 km official range, and the 2017 Model X P100D has a 465 km official range. The Model Y L, arriving in the fleet on 26 September 2026, has a WLTP range of 681 km, which is the longest of the group. If range is your absolute priority, the Model Y L is the one to watch, but it is not yet available for self-drive hire as of this article's publication date.
In real-world terms, the differences between the Model 3 Performance and the Model Y RWD are smaller than the official figures suggest, because the Model Y is a heavier vehicle with a less powerful motor. The Model X P100D is in a different category altogether, with 568 kW and 967 Nm, and it is chauffeur-only, so you are not the one managing the range. Our chauffeurs handle that.
If you are trying to decide between the Model 3 Performance and the Model Y for a Sydney trip, think about what you value. The Model 3 Performance is lower, faster and more engaging to drive. The Model Y is taller, more practical and has a slightly lower official range but a more spacious cabin. Both are excellent for Sydney driving.
Frequently asked questions about Model 3 Performance range
We get a lot of questions about range from customers. Here are the ones we hear most often, with straight answers based on our own experience with the car.
Can I drive from Sydney to Canberra in a Model 3 Performance without charging?
The distance from Sydney to Canberra is roughly 280 km, depending on your starting point. In a Model 3 Performance, you could theoretically make it on a full charge if you drive efficiently and the conditions are favourable. However, we recommend planning a charging stop, especially if you are starting from Parramatta and dealing with traffic. The car's navigation will suggest a stop if needed.
Does the Model 3 Performance have enough range for a week of Sydney driving?
Yes, easily. Most people drive less than 50 km per day in Sydney. The Model 3 Performance can cover that for several days without charging. If you are staying in a hotel with charging, you can top up overnight. If not, a single public charging session during the week will be more than enough.
How much does air conditioning affect range in a Model 3 Performance?
Air conditioning can reduce range by a noticeable amount, especially on very hot days. In our experience, the effect is more pronounced in stop-start traffic where the system is working to cool the cabin continuously. On the motorway, the effect is smaller because the airflow helps. As a rule of thumb, expect a small reduction in range when using the air conditioning heavily, but it is not dramatic.
Is the 567 km range figure realistic for Sydney?
It is realistic for gentle suburban driving in mild weather. For a mix of motorway and city driving, you will likely see closer to 450 km. That is still a substantial range and more than enough for a day trip or a weekend away. The key is to understand that the official figure is a best-case scenario, not a guarantee.
Can I use Tesla Superchargers with a hired Model 3 Performance?
Yes. The car is compatible with Tesla Superchargers, and the navigation system will route you to them. Payment for charging is handled through the car's account, and any charging costs are settled as part of your hire. You do not need a separate app or membership. The rate and any charging fees are shown on the car's page and in your booking total before you pay.
What happens if I run low on charge in the Model 3 Performance?
The car will warn you well in advance, and the navigation will direct you to the nearest charger. If you follow the prompts, you will not run out. In the unlikely event that you do, contact us and we will assist. But with a little planning, range anxiety is not a real issue in Sydney.
Our verdict on real-world range
The 2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance is a car that can comfortably handle everything Sydney throws at it. Its real-world range of around 450 km in mixed driving is more than enough for daily use, day trips and weekend getaways. The official 567 km figure is achievable in the right conditions, but even when it is not, the car has a generous buffer.
What we like most is that the range does not come at the expense of performance. You still get 370 kW, 660 Nm and a 0-100 km/h time of 3.3 seconds. You can enjoy the car's pace and still have plenty of range left for the drive home. That balance is what makes it such a compelling hire.
If you are planning a trip, take a look at our Tesla hub for the full fleet, or go straight to the Model 3 Performance page to check availability. We deliver anywhere in Sydney, or you can collect from Parramatta. The minimum driver age is 20, and all fees are transparent from the start.
