- Delivered across Sydney
- Bond and fees shown before you pay
- Never swapped to a lesser car
The minimum age to hire a self-drive Tesla in our Sydney fleet is 20 for the Model 3 Performance and 25 for the Model Y. That gap surprises people, because the two cars sit in the same booking flow and look equally quick on paper. Here is exactly how age, licence class and insurance rules work in NSW before you book.
Check the car that fits your age
The Model 3 Performance is open from age 20 and the Model Y from 25. Open the car page to see the live rate, bond and inclusions before you commit.
The short version: who can drive what
We keep the rules simple and we publish them on every car page. You need to be at least 20 years old to hire the 2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance on a self-drive basis. You need to be at least 25 to hire the 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD on a self-drive basis.
The 2017 Tesla Model X P100D is different in one important way: it is chauffeur only. A Drive Tribe driver is behind the wheel, so there is no minimum driving age for the passenger. The age rule exists to keep self-drive insurance valid, not to make a statement about anyone's ability.
Why the two self-drive cars have different minimums
Insurers price risk by vehicle, driver age and history. A dual-motor Model 3 Performance with 370 kW and 660 Nm is a very different underwriting proposition to a rear-wheel-drive Model Y with 220 kW and 420 Nm. The Model 3 Performance also has Track Mode, which is one of the reasons its minimum sits where it does.
If you are 20 to 24 and want a self-drive Tesla, the Model 3 Performance is the one to look at. If you are 25 or over, both self-drive cars are open to you.
Licence requirements for a Tesla hire in NSW
You need a current, full driver licence. In NSW that normally means a full C class (car) licence, and we accept full licences issued in other Australian states and territories.
Overseas visitors can drive on a valid overseas licence, provided it is written in English or accompanied by an official translation or an International Driving Permit. If your overseas licence is not in English, bring the translation or permit with you on the day.
Learner and provisional licences
We do not hire self-drive Teslas to learner or provisional licence holders. This is not a Drive Tribe preference; it flows from how the vehicle is insured. If you hold a P1 or P2 licence, the chauffeur-driven Model X is the option that works, because you are a passenger rather than the driver.
What we check before handover
We sight your physical licence at handover, confirm the photo, the expiry date and the class, and match it to the booking. We also run the standard identity and payment checks that any hire company runs. We do not name our verification or payment partners here, but you will see them in the booking flow, and everything is completed before you collect the car or before we deliver it to you.
Insurance: what is included and what it covers
Every Drive Tribe Tesla hire includes insurance cover as part of the booking. The exact inclusions, the bond amount and any excess are shown on the car's page and in your booking total before you pay. We do not quote those figures in articles because they can change, and we would rather you read the live number than an old one.
The practical points that do not change:
- The policy is tied to the named driver on the booking. Someone who is not on the booking is not covered, even if they hold a full licence.
- You must hold the licence class required for the car and meet the minimum age for that car.
- You must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and you must not use the car for any purpose excluded in the terms.
- Any damage, incident or theft must be reported to us promptly so we can lodge it correctly.
If you are unsure whether a specific situation is covered, ask us before you book rather than after. It is a two minute conversation and it saves a lot of guesswork.
How the rules differ across our three Teslas
This is the table we send people who ask which car they are actually allowed to book. It uses only the real specifications and rules from our fleet.
Two things stand out. First, the Model X is the only car in the fleet with no self-drive age rule, because it is chauffeur only. Second, the Model 3 Performance is the only self-drive car open to drivers aged 20 to 24, which makes it the entry point for younger hirers.
The chauffeur option and why it changes the age question
Because the Model X P100D is chauffeur only, the age question disappears for the passenger. A Drive Tribe driver handles the car, so you can book it for a 19th birthday dinner, a corporate arrival at Sydney Airport, or a wedding party without worrying about a minimum driving age.
The Model X itself is a 568 kW, 967 Nm seven-seat SUV with Ludicrous mode and falcon-wing rear doors. It is blue and based at Merrylands. When I have driven it around the inner west, the thing passengers notice first is the rear door theatre, and the second thing is how quietly it gathers speed once the driver is on the throttle.
If your trip is work-related rather than a celebration, our piece on Corporate Transfers in a Tesla Model X: The Boardroom-to-Airport Case walks through how that booking usually works.
What actually happens on the day
For self-drive bookings, you can collect from the car's base suburb: Parramatta for the Model 3 Performance, Merrylands for the Model Y. We also deliver anywhere in Sydney, which most people choose because it removes a train trip from the day.
At handover we walk you through the car. That matters more on a Tesla than on a conventional hire car, because the controls are not where a first-time driver expects them. The gear selection, the indicator stalk placement on newer cars, the charging flap, and the way the car behaves when you lift off the accelerator all get a few minutes of attention.
One thing I always mention: the regenerative braking is strong enough that you can drive most of a Sydney commute without touching the brake pedal. If you have never driven a Tesla, spend the first ten minutes in a quiet street getting used to it. Our guide to One-Pedal Driving: The Tesla Habit That Takes Ten Minutes to Learn covers the technique properly.
Charging, Superchargers and the rules that come with them
Charging is part of the practical side of hiring an electric car, and it is worth understanding before you drive away. Tesla's Supercharger network is the fastest and most reliable option on longer runs, and the car's navigation will route you to one and precondition the battery on the way.
Around Sydney, most renters never need a Supercharger at all. A Model 3 Performance has 567 km of range and a Model Y has 466 km, which covers a full day of city driving, the Northern Beaches, the Blue Mountains run or a Hunter Valley day trip with range to spare. If you are staying somewhere with a power point, an overnight top-up on the supplied charging cable is usually enough.
When you do use a Supercharger, the rules are simple: plug in, let the car and the network handle the session, and move the car once charging is done, because idle fees apply at busy sites. The car tells you when you have enough charge to reach your next stop.
Common situations and how we handle them
I am 22 and want a Tesla for the weekend
Book the Model 3 Performance. It is the only self-drive Tesla in our fleet available from age 20. It is also the quickest thing we hire on a self-drive basis, with a 0-100 time of 3.3 seconds and Track Mode if you are heading to a track day.
I am 24 and want the Model Y
You would need to wait until 25 for the Model Y on self-drive, or book the Model X with a chauffeur if the trip suits a driven car. We would rather tell you that upfront than take a booking we cannot honour.
My partner and I both want to drive
Every driver must be named on the booking and must meet the age and licence requirements for that car. Adding a second driver is done at the time of booking, not at the kerb, because the insurance is issued against named drivers.
I hold an overseas licence
Bring the physical licence plus an official English translation or an International Driving Permit if the licence is not in English. We check it at handover the same way we check an Australian licence.
I want the car for a photoshoot, not a drive
That is a different booking type with its own arrangements. Our piece on Teslas for Photoshoots and Content in Sydney: Which Model Photographs Best explains which model suits which kind of shoot.
Choosing between the three cars
If age is not a constraint, the decision comes down to what the trip actually is. The Model 3 Performance is the driver's car: 370 kW, 660 Nm, 3.3 seconds to 100 km/h, 567 km of range, Track Mode, and a minimum age of 20. It is based at Parramatta.
The Model Y is the practical one: five seats, 466 km of range, 220 kW, and a minimum age of 25. It is silver, based at Merrylands, and it is the car most people choose for a family weekend or a week of Sydney errands.
The Model X is the occasion car: seven seats, 568 kW, 967 Nm, 3.1 seconds to 100 km/h, Ludicrous mode, falcon-wing doors, and a chauffeur included. There is no self-drive age rule because you are not driving.
If you want the full side-by-side, our comparison of Every Tesla Model Compared for Renters: 3, Y, Y L, X and S covers the range in one place, including the models we do not currently hold.
And if you want to understand the Model 3 Performance specifically before booking, the 2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance Review: Still the Benchmark Fast EV is written from the driver's seat.
What about the Model Y L
The six-seat long-wheelbase Model Y L is not in our fleet yet. We write about it as a model explainer only. If it is something you would want to hire when it arrives, tell us, because demand shapes what we add next. In the meantime, the five-seat Model Y and the seven-seat Model X cover most of the same brief.
The paperwork, in order
- Check the minimum age for the car you want: 20 for the Model 3 Performance, 25 for the Model Y, no driving age rule for the chauffeur-driven Model X.
- Confirm you hold a full licence of the right class, and that any overseas licence is in English or officially translated.
- Name every driver on the booking. Unnamed drivers are not covered.
- Complete the identity and payment checks in the booking flow. The rate, bond and fees are shown in your total before you pay.
- Choose delivery anywhere in Sydney, or collection from Parramatta or Merrylands depending on the car.
- Allow ten minutes at handover for the walkthrough, especially if it is your first Tesla.
The whole process is designed to be finished before the day. If anything is unclear, the Tesla hire Sydney hub links to every car page and the current terms.
If the Tesla is booked
We never move you down a tier. If your dates are taken, these are the luxury cars we will offer instead, and we will tell you plainly if none of them is free rather than substituting something lesser on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum age to hire a Tesla in Sydney?
For self-drive, the minimum is 20 for the 2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance and 25 for the 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD. The 2017 Tesla Model X P100D is chauffeur only, so there is no minimum driving age for passengers. Every driver named on a self-drive booking must meet the age and licence requirements for that specific car.
Can I hire a Tesla on a provisional licence in NSW?
No. We hire self-drive Teslas to full licence holders only, which in NSW means a full C class car licence or an equivalent full overseas licence. Learner and provisional licence holders can still travel in the chauffeur-driven Model X, because a Drive Tribe driver operates the car and the passenger does not need to hold a licence.
Do you accept overseas licences for a Tesla hire?
Yes, provided the licence is current and written in English, or is accompanied by an official translation or an International Driving Permit. Bring the physical licence to handover so we can sight it and match it to the booking. The same age minimums apply regardless of which country issued your licence.
Is insurance included in a Tesla hire?
Yes, insurance cover is included as part of every booking. The exact inclusions, the bond and any excess are shown on the car's page and in your booking total before you pay. Cover applies to named drivers only, so anyone who intends to drive must be added to the booking in advance.
Can someone else drive the Tesla I hired?
Only drivers named on the booking are covered. Adding a second driver is done when you book, not at handover, because the policy is issued against named drivers who meet the age and licence requirements for that car. An unnamed driver would leave you exposed if anything happened.
Why is the Model Y minimum age higher than the Model 3?
The two cars are insured differently. The Model 3 Performance is a dual-motor all-wheel-drive car with 370 kW, while the Model Y RWD produces 220 kW, and insurers assess risk by vehicle as well as driver. The result is a lower entry age on the Model 3 Performance and a higher one on the Model Y.
