A 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD has 466 km of range on a single charge, which is roughly the distance from Merrylands to the Hunter Valley and back with a dinner detour in between. That single number is why the Model Y is the car most people ask for when they want a Tesla weekend hire in Sydney rather than a one-day rental. We deliver it on a Friday, you keep it for the weekend, and we collect it on Monday.

Why a Weekend Is the Right Amount of Time in a Model Y

Most first-time Tesla renters book a single day and spend half of it learning the car. A weekend flips that. Friday evening is for getting comfortable with the touchscreen, the regen braking and the charging routine. Saturday and Sunday are for actually going somewhere.

The 2025 Model Y RWD is the sensible end of the Tesla range, and that is a compliment. It has 220 kW, 420 Nm and a 0-100 time of 5.9 seconds, so it is quick without being a handful. Rear-wheel drive keeps it simple in the wet. Five seats, a big glass roof and a boot that swallows a weekend's worth of bags without a fight.

If you want the long version of how it drives, our 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD Review: The Sensible Tesla, Rented covers the steering, the ride and the cabin in detail. This article is about the logistics of the weekend itself.

How Friday Delivery Works

We deliver anywhere in Sydney, or you can collect from the car's base suburb. The Model Y lives at Merrylands, which suits anyone in the Parramatta, Granville, Guildford or Blacktown corridor. If you would rather not drive out west on a Friday afternoon, we bring the car to you.

What to Have Ready

  • A valid licence for every driver you want on the booking. The minimum driver age for the Model Y is 25.
  • A phone with the Tesla app capability, or we walk you through the key card on handover.
  • A rough plan for Saturday, so we can point out the chargers on your route before you leave.

Handover takes about twenty minutes. We pair your phone, set your driver profile, show you the charge port and the Supercharger map, and then we get out of your way.

Where to Charge on the First Night

If you have off-street parking with a normal power point, plug in overnight. A standard outlet adds range slowly, but a Friday evening to Saturday morning top-up covers most local running around. If you do not have a power point, the Supercharger network around Sydney is dense enough that a twenty-minute stop on Saturday morning is all you need.

The Fleet at a Glance: Which Tesla Fits Your Weekend

We run three Teslas, and only two of them are self-drive. The table above sets out the differences. The short version: the Model Y is the practical choice for a weekend with people and luggage, the Model 3 Performance is the one to take if the drive itself is the point, and the Model X is chauffeur-only.

Model Y RWD (2025)

Five seats, 466 km of range, rear-wheel drive, 220 kW. Based at Merrylands. Minimum driver age 25. This is the car for a weekend away, a family visit, or a quiet run up the coast.

Model 3 Performance (2020)

Dual-motor all-wheel drive, 370 kW, 660 Nm, 0-100 in 3.3 seconds, 567 km of range, and Track Mode. Based at Parramatta. Minimum driver age 20. If your weekend includes a proper driver's road, this is the one. See the 2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance page for the full spec.

Model X P100D (2017)

Seven seats, 568 kW, 967 Nm, 0-100 in 3.1 seconds, 465 km of range, Ludicrous mode and falcon-wing rear doors. Chauffeur only, so a Drive Tribe driver is at the wheel and there is no minimum age for the passenger. Based at Merrylands.

Saturday: Where a Model Y Actually Shines

The Model Y is not the fastest Tesla we run, and it is not supposed to be. What it does well is cover ground quietly. On the Spit Bridge climb with a full car, the instant torque means you are never hunting for a gap. On the M1 heading north, the cabin is calm enough that conversation does not need raising.

When I drove the Model Y on a wet Saturday morning, the thing that stood out was how little drama there was. Rear-wheel drive, 420 Nm, and a smooth throttle map means it tracks straight and stays predictable. That is the right character for a weekend car, because you are often driving with other people in it.

Three Weekend Routes That Suit It

  • North to the Hunter. The M1 run up past Hornsby and Berowra, then the freeway to the vineyards. We have written the full version in Hunter Valley in a Model Y: Chargers, Cellar Doors and the Return Leg, including where to top up.
  • South to the Royal National Park. A shorter day out, but the coastal road rewards a quiet car. Charge at home or at a Supercharger before you leave and you will not think about it again.
  • West to the Blue Mountains. The climb out of Penrith eats range, and regen gives a lot of it back on the descent. Watch the estimated range on the way up rather than the way down.

Charging Without Overthinking It

Weekend renters worry about charging more than anything else, and it is almost always a non-issue. The Model Y tells you where the Superchargers are, how many stalls are free, and what your estimated charge will be on arrival. You do not need to plan a route around them.

Two habits make a weekend easy. First, charge while you are doing something else, not as a dedicated stop. Second, do not arrive home on Sunday night with a low battery if you have a Monday morning drive planned. A short top-up on Sunday afternoon removes the stress.

What We Tell Every Weekend Renter

  • Set your home or hotel as a destination in the nav so the car can factor the return leg into its range estimate.
  • Use the cabin pre-conditioning from the app before you get in. It costs range, but on a cold morning it is worth it.
  • Leave the car plugged in overnight if you can, even on a normal outlet.

Sunday: The Return Leg and the Monday Collection

We collect on Monday, which means Sunday night is yours. You do not need to rush back, and you do not need to wash the car or charge it to full before we arrive. We handle that.

If you collected from Merrylands, you can also return it there on Monday morning. Either way, the collection window is arranged when you book, so it fits around work rather than the other way around.

What We Check on Collection

We look at the charge level, the tyre condition and the cabin, the same as any handover in reverse. It takes a few minutes. If you have left personal items in the car, we will contact you and arrange a time to get them back.

One thing worth knowing: if you have a Monday morning meeting and you are returning the car yourself, leave a buffer. Merrylands is straightforward to reach from most of Sydney, but the M4 at peak is the M4 at peak.

Who the Model Y Weekend Hire Suits

The Model Y is the right car if you want a Tesla for a weekend without it becoming an event. It is a five-seat family car with a long range, a simple drivetrain and enough pace to be interesting. It is also the car we recommend to anyone who has never driven an EV, because it is the least demanding way to find out what the fuss is about.

If you want the sharper end of the range, the Model 3 Performance is the one to book. If you want to be driven, the Model X is the one. And if you are weighing up whether a Tesla makes sense for a longer rental at all, our Tesla Model Y Hire Sydney: The Everyday EV You Can Drive Yourself piece goes through the day-to-day case.

Other Reasons People Book a Weekend

What the Rate Covers and What It Does Not

The rate, the bond and any fees are shown on the car's page and in the booking total before you pay. We do not quote one number and charge another. If you are comparing a weekend hire against a longer rental, the per-day figure usually improves the longer you keep the car, and the booking page reflects that.

Delivery anywhere in Sydney is available, and collection from Merrylands is free of the delivery arrangement. Insurance, the bond and the inclusions are all set out on the car page so you can read them before you commit.

If you are not sure which Tesla suits your weekend, start at the Tesla hire Sydney hub and work from there. It lists every car we run with its real specs, its base suburb and its age rule.

About the author. Elie Arzoumlian has driven and lived with electric cars since the first Model S reached Australia. He writes about what EVs are like to actually use, charge and enjoy on Sydney roads, and tests every car in the Drive Tribe electric fleet himself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a Tesla weekend hire in Sydney work?

You book a Friday delivery or collection, keep the car across Saturday and Sunday, and we collect it on Monday. Delivery is available anywhere in Sydney, or you can collect from the car's base suburb. The Model Y is based at Merrylands. Everything is arranged at booking so the handover and collection fit around your schedule.

Can I drive the Model Y myself?

Yes. The 2025 Model Y RWD is a self-drive rental. The minimum driver age is 25, and every driver you want on the booking needs a valid licence. It is rear-wheel drive with 220 kW, so it is quick but easy to manage, which makes it a good first Tesla for most people.

Do I need to charge the car before returning it?

No. We handle charging between rentals, so you do not need to return it full. It is still worth topping up on Sunday afternoon if you have a Monday morning drive planned, but that is for your convenience rather than a requirement. The car shows nearby Superchargers in the navigation.

Is the Model Y big enough for a weekend away?

It has five seats and a large boot, so it handles a family or a group of friends with luggage comfortably. The glass roof makes the cabin feel open, and the rear seats fold if you need more space. For most weekend trips out of Sydney, it is more room than you will use.

What is the difference between the Model Y and the Model X?

The Model Y is self-drive, seats five and is based at Merrylands. The Model X P100D is chauffeur only, seats seven, has falcon-wing rear doors and Ludicrous mode, and a Drive Tribe driver is always at the wheel. There is no minimum age for passengers in the Model X because they are not driving.

Can you deliver the car to my home on Friday?

Yes. We deliver anywhere in Sydney. If you would rather collect, the Model Y is based at Merrylands, which suits the Parramatta and western Sydney corridor. The delivery and collection windows are agreed when you book, so you can plan around work.
