This is the M3 that ended the argument. For years the case against the G80 was that it had gone soft, gained weight and lost the purity of rear-wheel drive. Then BMW put M xDrive in it, the 2024 update lifted it to 390kW, and it started doing 0-100 in 3.5 seconds. It is now quicker than the AMG GT, quicker than most things that cost twice as much, and you can put four adults and their luggage in it.

It is also, quietly, the most useful fast car we own. Everything else at this level asks you to give something up. The M3 xDrive asks you to give up nothing at all, which is a strange thing to say about a car with a competition badge on the boot.

What It Is Actually Like in Sydney

All-wheel drive is why it is this quick

390kW through two wheels is a traction problem. Through four it is a launch. M xDrive is rear-biased and only sends torque forward when the rears are struggling, so it does not feel like a numb all-wheel-drive car. It feels like a rear-drive car that has stopped wasting your time.

And you can switch it off

There is a 2WD mode that fully decouples the front axle. We mention it because people ask. We also ask that you use it sensibly and nowhere near a public road with traffic on it.

The inline-six is underrated

The S58 does not have the drama of a V8 or the shriek of a V10, but it pulls relentlessly from about 2,500rpm all the way to the limiter with no discernible step. On a real road that flexibility makes it faster than cars with bigger numbers.

It works as an actual car

This is the one you can take to a client meeting, then to dinner, then to the airport with three passengers, and still enjoy the drive up the Old Pacific Highway on Sunday. Nothing else in this tier does all four.

Things You Should Know Before You Book

The ride is firm. Comfort mode is genuinely comfortable by performance-sedan standards, but this is not a limousine and Parramatta Road will remind you.

The seats in Competition specification are heavily bolstered. Excellent once you are in, slightly awkward getting out in formalwear.

It is a sedan, so it does not have the arrival presence of the G-Wagon. If the booking is about being seen, take the G.

If the M3 is booked

We never move you down a tier. If your dates are taken, these are the exotic cars we will offer instead, and we will tell you plainly if none of them is free rather than substituting something lesser on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I collect it?

Our Mascot depot, closest to the airport and about 8km from the Sydney CBD, or Parramatta if you are coming from the west. We also deliver across the Sydney metro area through our host network, including Bankstown.

How is this different from your other two M3s?

We run three. The 2016 F80 is the rear-drive, stage-tuned one with the rawest character. The 2021 G80 is rear-drive and 375kW. This 2024 car is the all-wheel-drive Competition xDrive at 390kW, and it is the quickest and the most usable of the three.

What licence and age do I need?

A full Australian or recognised overseas licence held for the required minimum period. Provisional licences are not accepted. Additional requirements apply at this tier and are confirmed before your booking is accepted.

Is there a security bond?

Yes, a refundable hold placed at pickup and released after return and inspection. The amount is shown before you confirm.

Can I take it on a track?

No. Circuit and track use is not permitted on any of our vehicles, including this one.

Can I take it interstate?

With prior written approval. This is one of the better cars in our fleet for genuine long-distance work.
