- Delivered across Sydney
- Bond and fees shown before you pay
- Never swapped to a lesser car
The X6 is the car nobody puts on a poster and a lot of people book twice. It is quick enough to be interesting, big enough to be useful, and quiet enough that a long drive is genuinely pleasant. That combination is rarer than the spec sheet makes it look.

A straight six with a single turbo, all-wheel drive, and a body somewhere between an SUV and a
coupe. On paper it is a compromise. In practice it is the car in our fleet that most often gets
booked for a specific job and then kept for the whole week.
What It Is Actually Like in Sydney
The engine is the reason to choose it
BMW's turbocharged six is one of the smoothest engines made by anyone, and it is the whole
character of this car. Torque arrives early and stays, there is no drama, and it pulls to the top
of the rev range without ever sounding strained.

The result is a car that is quick without feeling like it is trying. 5.5 seconds to 100km/h is
brisk in anything; in a two-tonne SUV that is also quiet and comfortable, it is genuinely
unusual.
It is more comfortable than the M Sport badge suggests
The suspension is firm rather than harsh, and Sydney's patched surfaces come through as a
distant thud rather than an impact. On a motorway it settles completely. Passengers who expect a
sports SUV to be tiring are usually surprised.
The roofline costs you height, not usefulness
This is the honest trade. The sloping rear cuts vertical space in the boot, so anything tall
becomes awkward. Suitcases, which lie flat, are entirely fine, and there is more floor area than
people expect.
Rear headroom is the other consequence. Adults fit, and a very tall passenger in the back will
notice the roof. For four adults on a long trip it is comfortable; for four tall adults it is
worth a conversation first.
City driving is easy for its size
Good visibility forward, excellent cameras, and a car that shrinks around you once you are
moving. It is wide, and older car parks need care, but nothing about it is intimidating in
traffic.
Things You Should Know Before You Book
It is five seats, firmly
No third row and no pretending otherwise. If you need six or more, this is not the car and the
Range Rover Sport seven-seater or the Carnival is.
Wheels and kerbs
Large wheels with low-profile tyres look superb and are unforgiving of Sydney kerbs. Nothing
about that is unusual for the class, and it is worth an extra second when parallel parking.
Fuel is reasonable for the performance
The six is efficient for what it delivers, particularly on a highway run. It is not a small
car and it does not pretend to be, but it is markedly cheaper to run than any of the V8s in the
fleet.
What People Get Wrong About It
They think the shape is only styling
It is mostly styling, and that is fine, but it has a real consequence worth knowing before you
book rather than after you load. The sloping roof takes height out of the boot, so the question is
never how much will fit, it is what shape it is. Cases, bags and boxes that lie down are fine.
Anything you want to stand up is not.
They assume it drives like a big SUV
It does not, and this is the thing guests remark on most. The centre of gravity is lower than
the height suggests, the steering is quicker than the class norm, and it changes direction with
much less lean than something like the Defender. On a good road it is genuinely enjoyable rather
than merely competent.
They compare it to the wrong cars
People cross-shop it against seven-seat family SUVs and then find it short on space, or against
sports cars and find it heavy. It is neither. It is a fast, quiet, five-seat car that happens to
sit high, and judged as that it is one of the most complete vehicles we run.
They underestimate it on a long drive
This is where it quietly wins. Refinement, seat comfort and a relaxed engine at highway speed
add up over three hours in a way that no specification captures. It is the car most likely to be
extended mid-hire, which is about as direct a verdict as we get.
How It Compares to the Rest of the Fleet
Against the Range Rover Sport
The comparison most people are actually weighing. The Range Rover is quieter, rides better and
has a square boot and a seven-seat option. The X6 is quicker, sharper to drive and more engaging
on a good road. For families and long trips, the Range Rover. For a driver who happens to need
space, the X6.
Against the M3 Competition xDrive
Same manufacturer, same all-wheel drive, wildly different intent. The M3 is a performance car
with practicality attached; the X6 is a practical car with performance attached. The M3 is
significantly quicker and significantly firmer. If the driving is the point, the M3. If the trip
is the point, this.
Against the Macan
The Macan is smaller, lighter and more agile; the X6 is faster, roomier and more comfortable
over distance. For city use and tight parking the Macan wins. For a week of mixed driving with
passengers and luggage, the X6.
The Trips Worth Booking It For
Airport runs and business travel
The most common booking by a wide margin, and the job it does best. Five adults, real luggage,
quiet cabin, and enough pace that the drive back into the city is not tedious.
The Southern Highlands or the Hunter
Long motorway legs where refinement matters, then good roads at the far end where the engine
earns its keep. It handles both halves better than most cars manage either.
A week where the plan keeps changing
This is the car to take when you do not know exactly what the week holds. It is quick enough,
big enough and comfortable enough that it is rarely the wrong answer to anything.
The Trips It Is Wrong For
Anything involving seven people
Five seats and no third row. There is no clever configuration that changes this, and the Range
Rover Sport seven-seater or the Carnival is the answer instead.
Genuine off-road
All-wheel drive and a formed dirt road, yes. Anything past that is the Defender, and the
low-profile tyres are the limiting factor long before the drivetrain is.
Moving anything tall
Covered above and worth repeating because it is the one complaint we occasionally get. The
roofline is the trade you make for the way it looks and drives. If the load is bulky rather than
heavy, take something square.
Who Actually Books This One
People who looked at the supercars, thought about their actual week, and chose the car they
would rather be in on Wednesday morning. Business travellers. Families of four who want the drive
to be enjoyable rather than merely survivable.
It is also, quietly, one of our highest repeat-booking cars. Nobody photographs an X6. A lot of
people book it again.
If you are choosing between this and something more dramatic, the question worth asking is how
many hours you will actually spend in the car. For a two-hour occasion, take the drama. For a
week of real driving with other people aboard, this is very often the better decision, and the
people who make it tend to make it twice.

If the BMW X6 xDrive 40i M Sport is booked
We never move you down a tier. If your dates are taken, these are the performance cars we will offer instead, and we will tell you plainly if none of them is free rather than substituting something lesser on the day.
Range Rover Sport
- Up to 294kW
- AWD
- 5 or 7 seats
- Air suspension
Three of them in the fleet, which means it is the prestige car most likely to actually be free on your dates.
BMW M3 Competition xDrive
- 390kW
- 3.5s
- AWD
- 5 seats
Quicker than most of the exotics with four doors and a boot. The one that asks you to give up nothing.
Need more room than a coupe roof allows?
The Range Rover Sport gives you the same comfort with a proper square boot and up to seven seats. Tell us the load and we will tell you which one fits.
Guide rates, weekday winter pricing. Longer hires taper; the exact total for your dates is shown before you pay.
The bond held on your card equals the excess of the cover you choose. It is a pre-authorisation, released after return.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I collect it?
Mascot or Parramatta, or delivered to you. Delivery across the Sydney metro is arranged when you book rather than negotiated on the day.
Is the sloping roof a problem for luggage?
It costs you height, not floor space. Suitcases lie flat without trouble; tall boxes and anything you would want to stand upright do not. If you are moving something bulky, the Range Rover or the Defender is the better call and we will say so.
Is it quick?
Genuinely, and it hides it well. 250kW and 5.5 seconds to 100km/h in something this size is fast enough that overtaking is effortless and quick enough to surprise passengers who assumed it was just a large SUV.
What licence and age do I need?
A full licence held for the required period, verified in person at handover. Additional drivers must be listed on the booking and meet the same requirements.
Is there a security bond?
Yes, and the amount is on your booking before you pay. It is a pre-authorisation rather than a charge and is released after the car comes back.
Is there a kilometre limit?
Yes, stated before payment. Additional kilometres are charged at a set rate rather than estimated afterwards.
Is it good for airport runs?
Very. It is one of the most-booked cars we have for exactly that: five adults fit properly, the boot takes real luggage, and it is quiet enough that a drive straight after a long flight is restful.
Can I take it on unsealed roads?
Formed dirt roads, yes. It is all-wheel drive and perfectly capable of a gravel driveway or a country access road. Genuine off-road use is not permitted, and the low-profile tyres would not thank you for it anyway.
Can I take it interstate?
With prior written approval noted on the booking so the kilometre allowance and roadside cover are set correctly.
Does it fit in a standard car park?
Yes, comfortably. It is wide rather than tall, so height barriers are not the issue they are with the Defender or the G-Wagon. Older inner-city car parks with narrow bays need a little care, mostly because of the wheels rather than the body.
Is it a good first prestige hire?
One of the best, and we recommend it often. It is quick without being demanding, comfortable without being dull, and there is nothing about it that requires a particular kind of driving experience. Nobody has ever been intimidated by an X6.
How does it handle a full load of passengers?
Well. The engine has enough torque that four adults and luggage make almost no difference to how it drives, which is not true of smaller-engined SUVs. The only thing that changes is rear headroom, and only for taller passengers.
