Manly has the worst geography in Sydney for hiring a car and the best geography for driving one. Everything worth booking sits on the other side of the Spit Bridge, and everything worth driving starts about ten minutes from your front door. Our host network exists to remove the first problem entirely, so you can get straight to the second.

The Spit Bridge Is the Entire Argument for Delivery

Every suburb has reasons to prefer delivery over a depot collection. Manly has one that
outweighs all the others, and anyone who has driven it at the wrong time already knows exactly
what it is.

Manly to Mascot is not a short trip

On a map it looks like twenty-five minutes. In practice you are crossing the Spit Bridge,
climbing Military Road through Mosman and Neutral Bay, then taking the Harbour Tunnel and the
Eastern Distributor south. On a weekday afternoon, or any Saturday in summer, that is comfortably
forty-five minutes and frequently an hour. Double it for the return leg and a depot collection
has cost you two hours of a one-day booking before you have driven a metre of the car you are
paying for.

The Spit Bridge opens on a schedule, and it does not care about your booking

The bridge lifts for marine traffic on a published timetable, and when it does, traffic backs
up along Spit Road in both directions. If your collection window happens to coincide with an
opening, you are simply stopped. It is the single most reliable way to be late in Sydney.

Parking in Manly is its own problem

The streets around The Corso, Fairlight and the beachfront are metered or resident-permit,
narrow, and busy from early morning. Collecting from a depot means leaving your own car somewhere
for the length of the hire. With delivery, your car keeps its space and the hire car takes the
driveway, or we time the handover so the two swap in a single movement.

Delivery means the handover happens where the car will actually live

The person bringing the car knows what they are driving. If your driveway is short, steep or
tight, they will see it and work with it rather than you discovering the problem alone at
eleven at night. On a vehicle worth what these are, that matters more than it sounds.

The Exotic Fleet, and Which One Suits the Northern Beaches

There are three cars in our Exotic tier. They are deliberately very different from one another,
and on Northern Beaches roads they suit quite different bookings.

Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon

The 2018 G63: 430kW from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds, five seats and
a shape nobody fails to recognise. That was the year Mercedes properly redesigned the G for the
first time since 1979, giving it independent front suspension, a wider body and an S-Class cabin
while keeping the ladder frame and the three locking differentials.

For Manly it is the practical exotic. It handles the steeper Fairlight and Balgowlah driveways
without a thought, it seats five so a group travels together, and it is the vehicle we send to
more Northern Beaches weddings than anything else in the fleet.

Mercedes-AMG GT

A front-mid-engined 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 making 350kW, rear-wheel drive, two seats, with the
gearbox mounted over the rear axle for near-perfect weight distribution. This is the driver's car
of the three and the one to book when the road between two places matters more than either place.
Given what the Wakehurst Parkway and McCarrs Creek Road are like, that is a real argument here.

It is low, so the steeper driveways need care and a slow angled approach. It carries exactly
one passenger and a weekend's luggage for two.

BMW M3 Competition G80 xDrive

The 2024 car: 390kW, 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds, all-wheel drive, four doors and five seats.
Quicker than the AMG GT and vastly more practical. It is the easiest of the three to live with
on narrow beachside streets, and the one we recommend when someone wants the occasion without
surrendering the ability to carry people and luggage.

Where People Actually Drive From Manly

This is the part where Manly stops being inconvenient and starts being enviable. Three of the
best driving roads within an hour of Sydney start essentially at your door.

The Wakehurst Parkway

The obvious one and still the best. From North Manly it runs north through Garigal and
Ku-ring-gai Chase bushland to Narrabeen, sealed the whole way, with long sweeping corners, almost
no side streets and a surface that is generally excellent. It is roughly fifteen minutes end to
end and it is the reason a great many of our Northern Beaches bookings never go anywhere near the
city. Note that it is well patrolled, floods in heavy rain, and has genuine wildlife at dawn and
dusk. Drive it accordingly.

McCarrs Creek Road and Church Point

North to Mona Vale, then west through Church Point and along McCarrs Creek Road towards
Terrey Hills. This is the technical one: tight, tree-lined, dropping down to the water at
Church Point with views across Pittwater. It is narrower than the Wakehurst and demands more
attention, which is exactly why the AMG GT is the pick for it.

Barrenjoey Road to Palm Beach and West Head

The long coastal run north through Newport, Avalon and Whale Beach to Palm Beach, with the
option of turning inland to West Head for the lookout over Pittwater and Broken Bay. Around
forty-five minutes each way at a civilised pace. It is the single most photogenic drive on this
side of the harbour and it suits the G-Wagon perfectly.

North Head Scenic Drive

If you only have the car for an evening, this is the ten-minute version. Out through Manly
past the old quarantine station to the North Head lookout, with the city skyline across the
harbour. It is close, it is spectacular at sunset, and it is where most Manly bookings take their
first photographs.

The Old Pacific Highway

The proper day trip. North over the Mona Vale Road, across to the Pacific Highway and up the
old road between Berowra and the Hawkesbury River at Brooklyn. It is heavily policed and
deservedly so, but the sequence of corners and the quality of the surface are the best within an
hour of the city.

What the Northern Beaches Books These For

Weddings

Manly, Fairlight and Palm Beach carry a lot of wedding traffic, and the G-Wagon is the vehicle
we send most often. The reasons are practical before they are aesthetic: it is tall, so getting
in and out in a gown is straightforward where a low coupe is a genuine struggle, and it seats five
so the couple and attendants travel together rather than in convoy. It also photographs
extremely well against both the beach and the Pittwater bushland.

Formals

The October to November formal season is the other seasonal peak, and it books out first.
Worth noting that the driver still has to meet our licence and age requirements, which on this
tier are stricter than the rest of the fleet, so these are generally a parent driving rather
than the student.

Milestone birthdays

A weekend with the AMG GT, the Wakehurst Parkway on Saturday morning and Palm Beach on Sunday
is one of the most common fortieth and fiftieth bookings we take on this side of the harbour.

Photo shoots and content

Palm Beach, West Head and the North Head lookout are among the most shot locations in Sydney.
Commercial shoots must be declared on the booking so the correct cover is in place. That is not
bureaucracy for its own sake: standard hire cover does not extend to commercial production, and
the difference matters enormously if something goes wrong.

Visitors and returning residents

A meaningful share of our Northern Beaches bookings are people home from overseas for a few
weeks. Delivery to a family address rather than an airport counter is the entire appeal, and it
removes the one genuinely painful part of being car-less in Manly.

How Booking Works

1. Dates and address

Enter your dates and delivery address at checkout. Availability and any delivery fee are
confirmed before you pay, not after.

2. Licence and identity

Verified in person at handover. You will need a full Australian or recognised overseas licence
held for the required minimum period. Provisional licences are not accepted on this tier.
Overseas licences not in English need an International Driving Permit alongside them.

3. Security bond

A refundable hold is placed on your card at pickup and released once the vehicle is returned
and inspected. The exact figure is shown before you confirm the booking.

4. Handover and inspection

We photograph the vehicle with you present, walk through the controls and drive modes, and
confirm the fuel and kilometre position. The same happens on return, which is what makes the
bond release straightforward rather than a negotiation.

5. Collection

We collect from your address at the agreed time. No depot run at either end.

If the G-Wagon is booked

We never move you down a tier. If your dates are taken, these are the exotic cars we will offer instead, and we will tell you plainly if none of them is free rather than substituting something lesser on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you deliver to Manly?

Yes. Manly is a well-covered area in our host network, along with Fairlight, Balgowlah, Seaforth, Freshwater, Queenscliff, Curl Curl, Dee Why and Narrabeen. Enter your address at checkout to confirm delivery and any fee before you pay.

Does delivery avoid the Spit Bridge problem?

That is exactly what it is for. We bring the car to you, so the Spit crossing and Military Road are our problem on the delivery run rather than two hours out of your booking. We build the crossing into the delivery window, including bridge opening times.

Will a G-Wagon fit up my driveway?

Almost always. Of the three it is the most capable on steep or short driveways because of its ground clearance. The AMG GT is the one to ask about, since it is low. Send a photo of the driveway when you enquire and we will tell you before you book rather than on the day.

Is delivery cheaper than collecting from the depot?

There is a delivery fee and it is shown before you pay. Once you count a Manly to Mascot round trip and what you would otherwise pay to park your own car, delivery is almost always better value on a one-day hire, and it is not close on a same-day booking.

Which car suits the Wakehurst Parkway best?

The AMG GT, comfortably. It is rear-wheel drive with the gearbox over the rear axle, and long sweeping sealed corners are exactly what that chassis was built for. If the forecast is wet, take the M3 instead, which is all-wheel drive.

How far ahead should I book?

As far ahead as you can for a specific car on a specific date. There are only three vehicles in this tier, and the wedding and formal seasons book out first. For a flexible weekend drive, a week or two is usually enough.

What if it rains?

The G-Wagon and the M3 are both all-wheel drive and entirely comfortable in Sydney weather. The AMG GT is rear-wheel drive with substantial torque and asks for more care. If your dates look wet and you were leaning towards the GT, tell us and we will give you an honest recommendation rather than just taking the booking.

Can I take it on the Wakehurst Parkway at night?

You can, but we would rather you did not treat it as a driving road after dark. There is genuine wildlife on that stretch at dawn and dusk, and it floods in heavy rain. Drive it in daylight and it is one of the best roads in Sydney.

Can I take it on a track day?

No. Circuit and track use is not permitted on any of our vehicles under any circumstances.

Is there a kilometre limit?

Yes, and it is stated on your booking before you pay. Additional kilometres are charged at a set rate rather than estimated after the fact.

Can someone else drive it?

Only if they are listed as an additional driver on the booking and meet the same licence, age and history requirements. An unlisted driver voids cover entirely, so this is not a rule we are flexible about.

What happens if I damage it?

Your liability is capped at the excess stated on your agreement, and damage is assessed against the handover photographs taken with you present. Usage charges such as fuel and excess kilometres sit outside that cap.

Can I take it interstate?

With prior written approval, noted on the booking so the kilometre allowance and roadside cover are set correctly. We assess these requests individually.
