A Tesla Model Y RWD is rated at 466 km of range, which is roughly the distance from Merrylands to Newcastle and back with a sensible margin left. That single number is also the reason a twenty minute dealership test drive tells you almost nothing about whether the car fits your life. A tesla test drive rental for a full week lets you run the school drop-off, the M4 commute, the weekend away and the charging routine before you sign anything.

2025 Tesla Model Y RWD in silver, Drive Tribe fleet car, Sydney

Most people who buy an electric car in Sydney are making a decision worth living with for years, based on a drive lasting less time than the queue at a Service NSW counter. We rent Teslas for a living, and we see the same pattern: the buyers who borrow one for a week come back with a clear yes or no, and the buyers who take a short lap around a dealership block come back with questions.

This guide is about using a rental as a structured test. It covers what to book, what to measure, what to ignore, and how to plan a week that actually answers the questions you have.

Why a Twenty Minute Test Drive Fails on an EV

Petrol cars are forgiving of short test drives because the ownership experience is mostly familiar. You already know how to refuel, roughly what fuel costs, and where the nearest station is. An EV changes the rhythm of your week, and that rhythm is what you are actually buying.

The 2025 Model Y RWD we run is a rear-wheel drive car with 220 kW and 420 Nm, and it does 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. Those numbers are easy to feel in five minutes. What you cannot feel in five minutes is how the car behaves on the third consecutive day of the same commute, how the cabin handles two kids and a pram, or whether you actually enjoy one-pedal driving or quietly resent it.

The other thing a short drive hides is charging. If you never plug the car in, you never learn whether your apartment building, your workplace or your street can support it. That is the single biggest reason people regret an EV purchase, and it has nothing to do with the car.

What a Week Actually Tests That a Day Does Not

A week covers a full cycle of Sydney life. Here is what we suggest you deliberately run through.

  • The weekday commute. Drive your real route at your real time. If you cross the Harbour Bridge or the Anzac Bridge at peak, you will learn more about the car in that hour than in any showroom.
  • The school or childcare run. Doors, boot height, child seat anchors, and how easy it is to load a pram into the rear of a Model Y. The car has 5 seats and a hatch, which sounds simple until you do it in the rain.
  • The grocery and hardware shop. Test the frunk and the underfloor boot space with actual shopping, not an empty bag.
  • One long run. Pick somewhere you genuinely go, whether that is the Central Coast, the Southern Highlands or Wollongong, and do it in the car rather than in your head.
  • One charge away from home. Use a Supercharger once, even if you do not need to. Knowing the routine removes most of the anxiety.

If you want a shorter, more structured version of this, our guide to a weekend in a Model Y covers the Friday-to-Monday format, which is a good middle ground if a full week is too much. You can read it here: A Weekend in a Model Y: Friday Delivery to Monday Collection.

The Model Y RWD Is the Right Car for This Experiment

We base the 2025 Model Y RWD at Merrylands, and it is the car we recommend for a try-before-you-buy week. The reasons are practical rather than emotional.

It is the volume Tesla. It is the one most Sydney buyers are actually considering, so the week you spend with it maps directly onto the decision you are about to make. It is rear-wheel drive with 220 kW, which is quick enough to be enjoyable and calm enough that you are not managing a performance car in traffic. The 466 km range figure is the one that matters most for this exercise, because it lets you run a normal week without planning your life around plugs.

The minimum driver age for self-drive on this car is 25. That is worth knowing before you plan the week, because it rules out some younger buyers who might otherwise want to use the rental as a trial.

If you want the full breakdown of the car itself, including the interior and the way it drives, we have written about it at length in our 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD Review: The Sensible Tesla, Rented.

How to Plan the Week So It Answers Real Questions

The mistake people make with a long rental is treating it as a holiday. You will enjoy it more, and learn more, if you treat it as an audit.

Write your questions down before you collect the car

Before pickup, write five questions. Examples that come up constantly: can I charge at home, does the boot fit the pram, is the ride too firm on Parramatta Road, do I like the touchscreen for climate, and would I rather have a bigger car. Then answer them in writing at the end of each day. By day seven you will have a clear verdict instead of a vague feeling.

Charge the way you would actually charge

If you have a driveway, charge at home overnight and see whether the range comfortably covers your week. If you live in an apartment, deliberately rely on public charging for a few days. That is uncomfortable, and that discomfort is the point. It tells you whether you need to solve a charging problem before you buy, not after.

Drive it tired, in traffic, and on a bad road

Anyone can enjoy a Tesla on a clear run down the M1. The real test is Homebush traffic at 5pm, or the rough surface on parts of the inner west. If you still like the car after that, you will like it for years.

Take one passenger who will be honest with you

Rear seat comfort, ride quality and the amount of road noise are things drivers stop noticing and passengers do not. Bring the person who will actually sit in the back.

What We Actually See When People Rent Before They Buy

When I drove the Model Y around Merrylands and out towards the M4, the thing that stood out was how quickly it stops feeling like an event. That is the highest compliment you can pay a daily driver. The acceleration is there when you want it, but the car settles into being a normal, quiet, easy thing to operate.

The people who come back from a week with a clear answer usually fall into two groups. The first group discovers that charging is easier than they feared, and they buy with confidence. The second group discovers that they need a bigger car, or a different charging setup, or that they simply prefer a sedan. Both outcomes are wins. The expensive outcome is buying first and discovering it in month three.

We also see people use the week to compare against the rest of the range. If you are weighing up whether you want the performance end of the lineup, the Model 3 Performance is a very different car, and our piece on Inside the Model 3 Performance: Screen, Autopilot and the Stuff Nobody Explains is a good primer on what changes when you move up.

The Rest of the Fleet, and When to Test Something Else

The Model Y RWD is our default recommendation for a try-before-you-buy week, but it is not the only sensible test.

If you are considering a larger family car and want to understand what seven seats and a much heavier vehicle feel like, the Model X P100D is available as a chauffeur-driven experience only. That is a different product, and it is not a self-drive trial, so treat it as a way to experience the platform rather than to test your own daily driving.

If you are shopping in the performance bracket, the Model 3 Performance is the car to borrow. It is dual-motor all-wheel drive with 370 kW and 660 Nm, does 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, has a 567 km range, and includes Track Mode. The minimum self-drive age is 20. It is a genuinely different ownership proposition from the Model Y, and a week in one will tell you quickly whether you want that much car. Our Sydney to the South Coast in a Model 3 Performance: One Charge or Two? piece covers what a long run in it looks like.

What the Week Costs and How Booking Works

We do not publish rates in articles because they change with season, duration and availability. The rate for your dates, the bond, and every fee that applies are shown on the car's page and in the booking total before you pay, so there are no surprises at the end.

Delivery is available anywhere in Sydney, or you can collect from the car's base suburb. The Model Y RWD is based at Merrylands. The Model 3 Performance is based at Parramatta. If you are booking a week, delivery is usually the better option because it lets you start the test from your own driveway, which is exactly where the car will live if you buy one.

To book the Model Y for a week, go to the 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD page and choose your dates. If you are still deciding which car to test, our Tesla Model Y Hire Sydney: The Everyday EV You Can Drive Yourself guide is a useful starting point.

Common Mistakes People Make During the Trial Week

  • Never charging at home. If you have off-street parking, charge there. It is the single biggest factor in whether EV ownership feels easy.
  • Only driving in good conditions. Force yourself through a wet commute and a traffic jam.
  • Ignoring the passenger experience. Ask the people who will ride with you.
  • Treating one long trip as representative. A highway run is the easiest thing an EV does. Your weekday routine is the real test.
  • Not writing anything down. Memory is unreliable after a week of novelty. Notes are not.

Do those five things and you will finish the week with a decision rather than a mood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is renting a Tesla for a week worth it before buying?

For most buyers, yes. A week covers a full commute cycle, a school run, a shopping trip and at least one longer drive, which is far more information than a short dealership test. It also lets you test charging at home, which is the factor most likely to change your decision.

How much does a week-long Tesla rental cost in Sydney?

Rates vary by season, duration and availability, so we do not quote them in articles. The rate for your dates, the bond and every applicable fee are shown on the car's page and in your booking total before you pay.

Can I charge a rented Tesla at home?

If you have off-street parking and a standard power point, you can trickle charge overnight, which is slow but often enough for a commute. For faster home charging you would need a dedicated wall unit. During the rental, public charging and Superchargers are also available.

What is the minimum age to rent the Model Y?

The minimum driver age for self-drive on the 2025 Model Y RWD is 25. The Model 3 Performance has a minimum self-drive age of 20. The Model X P100D is chauffeur-only, so there is no self-drive age requirement for passengers.

How far can I go on one charge in the Model Y RWD?

The 2025 Model Y RWD is rated at 466 km of range. Real world range depends on speed, air conditioning, load and terrain, so plan longer trips with a charging stop in mind rather than relying on the full figure.

Can you deliver the car to my home for the trial week?

Yes. We deliver anywhere in Sydney, or you can collect from the car's base suburb. The Model Y RWD is based at Merrylands and the Model 3 Performance is based at Parramatta. Delivery lets you start the test from your own driveway.
