The 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD is the only car in our Sydney fleet that a 25-year-old can book, drive alone and park in a normal suburban driveway without a second thought. It makes 220 kW and 420 Nm, runs a 466 km range claim and seats five, which is why it is the Tesla most of our customers actually choose. I have driven ours from Merrylands to the Northern Beaches and back on a single charge without touching a Supercharger.

2025 Tesla Model Y RWD in silver, Drive Tribe fleet car, Sydney

Most people who search for a tesla model y hire sydney are not chasing a supercar moment. They want a modern electric SUV for a week, a wedding run, a family trip, or a proper test before they commit to buying one. That is exactly the gap the Model Y fills in our line-up, and it is the car I recommend first to anyone who has never driven an EV.

What You Are Actually Hiring

Our Model Y is a 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD in silver, based at Merrylands in Sydney's west. It is a self-drive hire, which means you collect it or we deliver it, and you are behind the wheel for the whole booking.

  • Single motor, rear-wheel drive
  • 220 kW and 420 Nm
  • 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds
  • 466 km claimed range
  • Five seats
  • Minimum driver age 25

Those numbers matter more than they look. A rear-wheel drive Model Y is not a slow car, but it is a calm one. The 5.9 second sprint is quick enough to merge onto the M4 at Punchbowl Road without a drama, and the 420 Nm arrives instantly the way it does in every Tesla, so the car never feels like it is working hard in traffic.

Why the Model Y Is the Sensible Tesla to Hire

We run three self-drive or chauffeur Teslas in Sydney, and they do very different jobs. The Model Y is the one that fits an ordinary week.

The cabin is tall, the rear door opening is generous, and the boot swallows a pram, a week of groceries or two large suitcases without a fight. The glass roof makes the back seat feel far bigger than the exterior suggests, which matters if you are carrying adults rather than children. And because it is a single-motor car, there is no front motor whine and no complexity you will never use.

If you want the fast one, that is a different conversation. The 2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance makes 370 kW, runs dual-motor all-wheel drive and has Track Mode, with a minimum driver age of 20. It is the enthusiast's pick. The Model Y is the household's pick.

Self-Drive Versus Chauffeur: Which Tesla Suits You

Not every Tesla we offer can be driven by the customer. The Model X P100D is chauffeur only, so it is booked with one of our drivers at the wheel. The table below sets out the difference across the fleet so you can pick the right one before you enquire.

Self-drive versus chauffeur: which Tesla you can actually drive yourself

The short version: if you want to drive, choose the Model Y or the Model 3 Performance. If you want to be driven, or you need seven seats and falcon-wing doors for an arrival, the Model X is the one, and there is no minimum age rule for the passenger because our driver is in control.

If you are weighing up the whole range, we have written a longer breakdown in Every Tesla Model Compared for Renters: 3, Y, Y L, X and S.

Living With the Model Y in Sydney

Sydney is a good city for a 466 km range EV, because almost nobody drives 466 km in a day here. The realistic pattern is a commute, a school run, a dinner in the city and a weekend trip, and the Model Y handles all of it without planning.

When I drove ours, the trip that stuck with me was the climb up from the Spit Bridge towards Seaforth. The road rises steeply and the traffic bunches, and the Model Y just pulls away from the pack with that silent surge that only an electric motor gives you. No downshift, no noise, no drama. That is the honest everyday appeal of this car.

Regenerative braking does most of the work in stop-start traffic on Parramatta Road. Once you are used to lifting off rather than braking, the car almost drives itself through the grind, and you arrive far less tired than you would in a petrol SUV.

Charging Without the Fuss

You do not need to install anything or sign up for anything to charge a Tesla. The Supercharger network is built into the car's navigation, so you tap the screen, it routes you to a charger, and it tells you how long to stop. In Sydney, that means you are rarely more than a short detour from a charge.

For most bookings, you will not need a public charger at all. If you have a standard power point at home or at your hotel, an overnight top-up covers the average day comfortably. If you are heading out of the city, we have a full route guide in Hunter Valley in a Model Y: Chargers, Cellar Doors and the Return Leg.

Delivery and Collection Across Sydney

You have two options with the Model Y. You can collect it from Merrylands, or we can deliver it to you anywhere in Sydney.

Collection from Merrylands suits anyone in the west and south-west. It is close to the M4, so you are on the motorway towards the city or the Blue Mountains within minutes of leaving. Delivery suits everyone else, and it is the option most of our customers take, because it turns the hire into a door-to-door service rather than a train trip.

We deliver to the inner west, the eastern suburbs, the north shore, the Northern Beaches, the Sutherland Shire and the Hills. If you are staying in a hotel in the CBD, we can meet you there. The practical detail, including the handover walk-around and how the car is explained to you on arrival, is covered in A Weekend in a Model Y: Friday Delivery to Monday Collection.

What the Handover Covers

Every Model Y handover includes a short walk-through. We show you how to open and start the car, how to set the mirrors and steering weight, how to use the navigation, and how to find a Supercharger. We also show you where the charging cable lives and how to plug in at a normal power point.

It takes about fifteen minutes, and by the end of it most people who have never driven an EV feel confident. The car does the rest.

Who Books the Model Y, and Why

Our Model Y bookings tend to fall into four groups.

  1. People considering buying a Tesla who want a proper test in real conditions rather than a ten minute dealer loop.
  2. Families who need five seats, a big boot and low running costs for a week.
  3. Visitors to Sydney who want a modern car with navigation and charging built in.
  4. Business users who want something quiet and presentable for client meetings.

The first group is the largest, and it is the reason we wrote Try a Model Y for a Week Before You Buy One. A week tells you things a test drive cannot: how the car behaves on your street, whether the boot fits your life, how you feel about charging, and whether the ride suits your local roads.

If your booking is for a shoot or a content day rather than transport, the Model Y is not always the best-looking choice in the fleet. We compare the options in Teslas for Photoshoots and Content in Sydney: Which Model Photographs Best.

The Booking Process, Plainly

You choose your dates, we confirm the car, and then we handle the paperwork and the handover. The rate, the bond and every fee are shown on the car's page and in the booking total before you pay, so there is nothing hidden and nothing to negotiate at the counter.

The minimum driver age for the Model Y is 25. You will need a valid licence and the usual identity checks, which we complete before the booking starts. If you are under 25 and want a self-drive Tesla, the Model 3 Performance is available from age 20, and you can read about it on the Tesla hire Sydney hub page.

What to Bring

  • Your driver's licence
  • The card or account you are paying with
  • Your booking confirmation

That is it. We do not ask you to download a third-party app or set up an account with anyone else. The car, the charging and the navigation are all Tesla's own systems, and they are already in the vehicle when you get in.

Is the Model Y L Coming to Sydney?

The Model Y L is a longer, six-seat version of the Model Y. It is a real model in Tesla's line-up, and it is a sensible answer for larger families who want three rows without stepping up to the Model X.

It is not in our fleet yet. We cannot take a booking for one, and we will not pretend otherwise. If you want to be told when that changes, ask us through the contact page and we will keep you on the list. In the meantime, the five-seat Model Y is the car we can put in your driveway, and for most Sydney households it is the more practical of the two anyway.

The Honest Summary

The Model Y is not the fastest Tesla, the biggest Tesla or the most dramatic Tesla. It is the one you can live with. A 466 km range, five seats, a 5.9 second sprint, self-drive from age 25, and a choice of delivery anywhere in Sydney or collection from Merrylands.

If you want to compare it against the alternatives before you decide, start with the car page, then read the comparisons. If you already know it is the one, book it and we will bring it to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old do I need to be to hire the Tesla Model Y in Sydney?

The minimum driver age for our 2025 Tesla Model Y RWD is 25. You will need a valid licence and to complete the usual identity checks before the booking starts. If you are under 25 and want a self-drive Tesla, the Model 3 Performance is available from age 20.

Can I collect the Model Y instead of having it delivered?

Yes. The Model Y is based at Merrylands, and you are welcome to collect it there. Merrylands sits close to the M4, so you are on the motorway quickly. Most customers choose delivery instead, and we cover anywhere in Sydney including the CBD, the north shore and the Northern Beaches.

How far can I drive on a single charge?

The 2025 Model Y RWD has a claimed range of 466 km. In real Sydney conditions you will see less than that, especially with air conditioning and highway speeds, but a normal day of city driving and a weekend trip will not require a public charger. The car's navigation will route you to a Supercharger if you need one.

Do I need my own charging account or cable?

No. Charging is handled through Tesla's own systems inside the car. The navigation finds Superchargers and tells you how long to stop, and a standard power point at home or at your hotel is enough for an overnight top-up. You do not need to sign up for anything extra.

Is the Model Y big enough for a family?

It seats five and has a large boot with a deep well under the floor, so it handles a pram, a week of luggage or a big grocery run easily. The glass roof makes the rear seat feel roomy for adults. If you need three rows, the Model X is the seven-seat option in our fleet.

Can I hire the Model Y to try before buying one?

That is one of the most common reasons people book it. A week of real driving tells you how the car fits your street, your parking and your charging routine in a way a short test drive cannot. We have written a longer guide on exactly that approach.
