Specifications

Model Porsche Macan
Year 2019
Power 185kW
0-100km/h 6.5 seconds
Drivetrain All-wheel drive
Seats 5
Tier Luxury

185kW is the lowest figure among the driver-focused cars here, and it matters far less than the
table suggests, because this is also comfortably the lightest and smallest vehicle in the tier.

The One That Drives Like a Car

Prestige SUVs mostly succeed by disguising their size - quiet cabins, soft suspension, cameras
everywhere, so that piloting something very large feels effortless. The Macan takes the opposite
approach. It is simply smaller, and rather than hiding the fact that it is an SUV, it more or less
declines to behave like one.

The steering has genuine weight and tells you what the front wheels are doing. It changes
direction promptly instead of leaning and settling. On a good road it is entertaining in a way that
nothing else in this tier attempts, and on an ordinary road it is simply easier to place.

If you have driven a large luxury SUV and found it comfortable but sedating, this is the answer
to that. It is the only car in the category we run that people talk about the driving of
afterwards.

What It Is Actually Like in Sydney

Parking it is genuinely easy

An unglamorous advantage that turns out to matter enormously. Around Bondi, Manly, Surry Hills or
anywhere with contested street parking, the difference between this and a full-size Range Rover is
the difference between finding a space and driving around looking for one.

If the hire is a week in a dense suburb rather than a trip out of town, this is the car in the
tier that will annoy you least, and that is a serious recommendation rather than a consolation.

It is quick enough, because it is light

6.5 seconds does not sound remarkable and feels better than it reads. The car is small and light
by the standards of everything around it, so the power available does more. It is never going to
worry a Performance-tier car, and it does not need to.

All-wheel drive for weather, not terrain

The all-wheel drive earns its keep on wet roads, which in a Sydney winter is most of what matters.
Ground clearance is modest and this is the least suited of our SUVs to rough surfaces. Permitted use
is sealed and formed dirt roads, and within that it is fine on a maintained gravel driveway and out
of its depth on anything worse.

Things You Should Know

Space is the trade you are making

Five seats on paper, four adults in comfort, and a boot that handles two people's weekend luggage
rather than a family's holiday. Everything the Macan is good at comes from being smaller, and the
cost of that is exactly what you would expect.

If you need to carry people or things, this is the wrong end of the tier and the GLS, Q7 or a
Range Rover Sport are the right answers. We would rather say that than have you book on the badge.

It is the value entry into genuine prestige

This sits at the accessible end of the luxury tier on price while still being an unambiguously
prestige car. For a booking where you want something genuinely good rather than something merely
large, it is frequently the best value decision in the fleet, and it is the car we most often
suggest when someone's budget and their expectations are not quite meeting.

Who it disappoints

Anyone expecting the presence of a full-size Range Rover. The Macan is a good-looking car that
does not dominate a driveway, and if the booking exists so that the vehicle is noticed at an event,
this is not the one. That is a real limitation and it is the reason it is not our wedding
recommendation.

When This Is the Right Booking

Book the Macan when you want to enjoy driving, when the car will spend time parked in dense
areas, when there are two or three of you rather than six, or when you want genuine prestige
without the size and the price of the flagships.

Book something else when you need seats, need luggage space, or need the car itself to be the
statement.

Where to Actually Drive It

This is the one car in the tier where the route is worth choosing deliberately, because it is the
only one that rewards the choice.

The Royal National Park south of the city is the obvious answer and deserves its reputation -
tight, well-surfaced, and exactly the sort of road where a smaller SUV with real steering feels
like a genuinely good car rather than a compromise. The run up to the Blue Mountains via the older
roads rather than the motorway is the other one, particularly early when it is empty.

What to avoid, if the driving is the point, is a straight motorway run. The larger cars in the
tier are quieter and more comfortable over three hours in a straight line, and the Macan's
advantages simply do not come into play. Booking this car and then spending the weekend on the M1
is choosing the wrong tool and not finding out why.

Living With It for a Week in the City

The other booking this car is unusually well suited to, and a genuinely different case from the
weekend drive.

Someone staying in the eastern suburbs or the inner city for a week who wants a prestige car
available rather than an event car will get more out of this than out of anything larger. It fits
in real parking spaces. It goes down narrow streets without a negotiation. It is small enough to
use casually, which the flagship SUVs genuinely are not.

The trade, again, is space - two people and their luggage rather than a family. But for a working
week, a couple visiting, or anyone whose days involve a lot of short trips and a lot of parking, it
is the car in this tier that will make you least aware of having hired an SUV at all.

Running Costs

The Macan is the most economical car in the luxury tier by a clear margin, which follows from it
being the smallest and lightest.

Over a week of city driving the difference against a full-size SUV is genuinely noticeable at the
pump rather than theoretical, and on a longer trip it compounds. It is not a hybrid and it is not
frugal in absolute terms - it is a performance-oriented petrol SUV - but among the prestige options
here it is comfortably the least expensive to run.

For a week-long hire that difference can offset a meaningful part of the gap between this and a
cheaper car outside the tier, which is worth factoring in before deciding on daily rate alone.

Booking It

Tell us your dates and where in Sydney to bring it. The bond, kilometre allowance and delivery
cost are shown with the hire price before you pay, and the minimum driver age on this tier is 20
with a full unrestricted licence.

If you are undecided between this and something larger, the useful question is how much of the
hire the car spends parked. The more it does, the stronger the case for the Macan gets, and that is
not a consideration a spec comparison will surface for you.

If the Porsche Macan is booked

We never move you down a tier. If your dates are taken, these are the luxury cars we will offer instead, and we will tell you plainly if none of them is free rather than substituting something lesser on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it actually good to drive, or is that marketing?

Genuinely good. It is meaningfully smaller and lighter than everything else in the tier, the steering has real weight and accuracy, and it changes direction like a car rather than leaning through corners like an SUV. It is the one in this category people comment on afterwards.

Is 185kW enough?

For what this car is, yes. It is the least powerful of the driver-focused options here and it is still quick enough to be entertaining, because it weighs far less than the large SUVs. If outright pace is the priority, the X6 or a Range Rover Sport are the quicker cars.

How many does it seat?

Five, though it is genuinely a four-adult car for comfort on a longer trip. The boot is adequate for two people's weekend luggage rather than generous. If space is the requirement, this is the wrong end of the tier.

Is it easy to park?

Easiest in the luxury tier by a clear margin, which around the eastern suburbs and the inner city is worth more than the spec sheet suggests. If the car is staying in a dense area for the week rather than leaving town, this is the sensible choice.

Where do I collect it?

Mascot or Parramatta, or we deliver anywhere across the Sydney metro. Delivery is priced by distance and shown with the hire and the bond before you pay.

What licence and age do I need?

A full unrestricted licence, checked in person at handover. The minimum age on the Luxury tier is 20, with Young Driver Cover at +25% of the daily hire for any named driver under 25.

Can I take it on unsealed roads?

Formed dirt roads yes, genuine off-roading no. Permitted use is sealed and formed dirt roads, which covers most rural driveways and national park access. It has all-wheel drive but modest ground clearance, so it is the least suited of our SUVs to rough surfaces.

Is there a security bond?

Yes, stated on the booking before you pay, held as a pre-authorisation against the named driver's card rather than charged, and released after the car comes back as it left. It is a hold rather than a payment, so the funds are reserved and not taken.

Is it a good choice for a long motorway trip?

Perfectly comfortable, though the larger cars in the tier are quieter and roomier over several hours. Where the Macan wins is any route with corners in it, which is the opposite of a motorway. For a straight run of several hours with a full car, the GLS or a Range Rover Sport is the better booking.
